Protesters bring the message of anti-war/anti-austerity to world leaders at the NATO summit in Chicago

Tens of thousands of activists stormed Chicago to protest against war and inequality while the city hosts the annual NATO convention. Today is day two of the summit and more protest demonstrations are planned. At least 45 people were arrested during peaceful marches and rallies over the weekend. While some are applauding the Chicago Police Department’s professionalism in dealing with protestors – others are pointing to repeated law enforcement abuses against citizen journalists and heavy-handed crowd control tactics.

Several journalists were arrested in Chicago over the weekend with little justification, and others were intimidated, detained, and interrogated without any probable cause. For today – demonstrators plan to march to Boeing’s headquarters in downtown Chicago to protest against the defense company’s role in our ongoing wars abroad. Keep an eye on this.

There will be mostly peaceful, law abiding protests, peppered with a few arrests.

Nothing, The media just tells us about how the protests might slow our commute. There is NO discussion about ISSUES. All they talk about is how Businesses are being hurt by the SECURITY or the PROTESTERS.
Not ONE story about the FUNCTION of NATO or why these SMELLY UNEMPLOYED WEIRD FREAKS are clogging up our streets. We have enough HOMELESS MENTALLY ILL Beggars. What news is in a PEACEFUL PROTEST anyway. "Nothing happening here."
"Wait, a 16 yr old DRUNK KID who is a WELL KNOWN ANARCHIST just puked on a COP and started a RIOT."
The Police Chief was quoted " The Anarchist Puker didn't get a PERMIT TO PUKE" He will be charged as a Terrorist and the case will be DISMISSED after a beating.
Cynical Enough?

The estimated number of protesters in Chicago during the summit was around 2000, far less than many anticipated. The leaders did not see anything of the protests, unless they happened to watch the evening news, and I think most of them left on Monday before the news comes on. There is only so much that can be accomplished with any form of protests. Local news reporters wondered if the message of the protests were not lost simply because there were mutliple causes that were being addressed, rather than a few unifying themes. Those who caused most of the problems were reportedly members of the so-called Black Bloc, who supposedly are anarchists but who seem mostly to want to cause a certain degree of chaos at such events, without having a real message. I answered dankir's blog posting mentioned above after the other reply, which I didn't understand as to its intent.

Can we make California the last oil spill?

A state of emergency has been declared in California after crews realized that the Rufugio Beach oil spill was five times worse than original estimates. This week, the Plains All American Pipeline ruptured and dumped crude oil over a four-mile stretch of pristine California coastline.

From Screwed:
"Thom Hartmann’s book explains in simple language and with concrete research the details of the Neo-con’s war against the American middle class. It proves what many have intuited and serves to remind us that without a healthy, employed, and vital middle class, America is no more than the richest Third World country on the planet."
Peter Coyote, Actor and author of Sleeping Where I Fall
From Unequal Protection, 2nd Edition:
"Hartmann combines a remarkable piece of historical research with a brilliant literary style to tell the grand story of corporate corruption and its consequences for society with the force and readability of a great novel."
David C. Korten, author of When Corporations Rule the World and Agenda for A New Economy
From Unequal Protection, 2nd Edition:
"Beneath the success and rise of American enterprise is an untold history that is antithetical to every value Americans hold dear. This is a seminal work, a godsend really, a clear message to every citizen about the need to reform our country, laws, and companies."
Paul Hawken, coauthor of Natural Capitalism and author of The Ecology of Commerce
