Marc Harrold, Observations of White Noise & Sam Sacks, The District Sentinel & Austin Petersen, The Libertarian Republic join Thom. On Saturday - the Senate took no action to re-authorize section 215 of the Patriot Act. Section 215 authorizes collection of telephone records - but has come under scrutiny in the lead-up to this re-authorization vote. Numerous reports have found "dragnet" collection of Americans' phone records to be ineffective in catching terrorists - and the Second Court of Appeals recently ruled that the NSA's "dragnet" collection of phone records isn't even covered under the letter of the law. The Senate needed 60 votes in order to move forward with the "USA Freedom Act" that was passed by the House last week - but could only come up with 57 of the needed 60 votes. With that vote failed - America is one step closer to the end of the NSA's bulk metadata collection program.
