How Big Ag Buys Off Scientists...

Patty Lovera, Food & Water Watch joins Thom Hartmann. Peer-reviewed research is the gold standard of the scientific community - but when it comes to research into the murky world of animal drugs - it's Big Ag that calls the shots. That's the conclusion of a shocking new report by Food and Water Watch - which has found that "To secure favorable scientific reviews, industry groups play an enormous role in the production of scientific literature authoring journal articles, funding academic research and also serving as editors, sponsors or directors of scientific journals where much of their research is published.” In other words - Big Ag basically owns the scientists who review its products.

Should Jeb Bush go to jail for voter fraud?

Neil McCabe, Townhall.com / The Washington Mercury vs. Thom Hartmann. Jeb Bush might want to start thinking about trading in the white pillars of the White House for the cold steel bars of a jail cell. That's because - as the New York Times notes - "In a 2009 voter-registration application, obtained from the Miami-Dade County Elections Department, Mr. Bush marked Hispanic in the field labeled 'race/ethnicity.’" That's right - Jeb Bush - a very white guy from a very white family claimed that he was Hispanic. Lying on a voter registration form is a felony with up to 5 years in jail as the penalty. So - if Republicans are so serious about combatting voter fraud - shouldn't they be calling on Jeb Bush to be sent to the big house?

The "Menendez" Citizens United Problem

Stephen Spaulding, Common Cause joins Thom Hartmann. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion that corporations should be able to spend unlimited amounts of money on independent political activities because, “independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption.” Kennedy also argued that while corporations that make independent expenditures “may have influence over or access to elected officials,” that doesn’t necessarily mean that those elected officials are corrupt. Well - fast-forward five years - and it looks like we have a clear cut case of a corporation’s political spending leading directly to corruption charges for a lawmaker. Last week - Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey was indicted on public corruption charges - stemming from what the Department of Justice says were actions he took to help out the business interests of a friend.
