Bigger Picture Panel - The Crisis in Yemem P2

For tonight's Bigger Picture Panel - we're going to take a closer look at a conflict that has many experts talking about a regionwide Cold War in the Middle East. Since late March - Saudi Arabia and a group of other Sunni Arab nations have been waging an air war against the Houthis - a rebel group that has taken over large swaths of territory in Yemen - the Arab world's poorest country. Coming amid rising tensions between the Saudis and Iran - the geopolitical consequences of this conflict are huge. It's also a humanitarian disaster. So far - an estimated 731 people have been killed - more than 2,754 have been injured - and more than 150,000 have been displaced. So what are the root causes of the crisis in Yemen? How is it dividing an already war-torn region? And what should the global community do to resolve a conflict that's threatening the lives of millions? Let's ask two experts - Ali al-Ahmed - Expert on Saudi politics at the Institute for Gulf Affairs and Scott Paul - Senior Humanitarian Policy Adviser at Oxfam America.

How The Deep Horizon Oil Spill is Still Harming Us

America's Lawyer Mike Papantonio, Ring of Fire Radio joins Thom. The rig explosion killed 11 workers and injured 16 others and caused one of the largest oil spills in US history. According to estimates - nearly 5 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf - devastating the marine ecosystems there and doing unprecedented damage to the Gulf’s fishing and tourism industries. The oil spill contaminated over 1,100 miles of Gulf coastline and killed countless numbers of marine animals - from sea turtles to pelicans to shrimp. The Gulf fishing industry lost at least $247 million because of the spill - while tourism in the area took a hit to the tune of $22.7 billion between 2010 and 2013. Five years later - BP - the oil giant behind the spill - is working hard to pitch the notion that the Gulf is finally returning to normal.
