The New Jim Crow

It is imperative that you read this book! The New Jim Crow: Mass incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. If nothing else the beginning chapters and the historical account of the rise of slavery on to the "new caste" gives the script the conservatives and tea party are using. From creating fear in poor white society to the strategy to create and continue racial instability, insecurity, and segregation with coded references in speeches, lawmaking, and policy it is chilling and true. The stratgies that created slavery, Jim Crow, and the mass incarceration that exists now is being perpetrated even today. While this is a primer on the effect on the African American community, in the current strategy substitute the word "Hispanic" or "Muslim" and you will see how these "others" are being targeted as well.
