Sens. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio) are questioning the EPA's decision to tighten the federal ozone standard that was updated by the George W. Bush administration two years ago. Tougher federal limits on ozone, which add to respiratory problems and outdoor haze, will impose higher costs on industry and make hundreds of counties fall short of federal air requirements, although they will improve air quality and save lives. But the Senators are concerned these new cleaner air standards may cut into the profits of their campaign donors and their friends.
