workers revolt in China

In this case, the revolt in Guangzhou was instigated by the rough handling of a pregant woman. The article also mentions riots in Lichuan, Hubei province, over the death of "an anti-corrruption crusader" in prison. The Guangzhou revolt is being carried out by migrant workers. The second-class status of migrant workers is an issue world-wide. This is a problem both for workers migrating within their own countries as well as those migrating to other countries. Workers of the world need to find some way to enforce worker's rights on the part of those who are not politically enfranchised within the local political structure where they work.

I remember Thom saying that there were something like 1000 citizen revolts per year in China, which I believe is accurate although they receive little media attention. This is a result of the ordinary citizens in mainland China receiving second or third class status in terms of pay, legal and political rights, and the problems are likely to only get worse as time goes on unless the government ameliorates them. The increasing middle class is one factor which has kept the revolts from being worse. Another related factor is the recent increases in minimum wage in the PRC.

Worker's rights, legal rights -- China has a very selective application of its laws -- and having a political voice are not yet part of the picture in the PRC, but hopefully they will be in the future. Otherwise, we can expect another Chinese revolution which will force the issue.
