Economics should be a part of life, not a steamroller crushing self-determination and creativity. Economics changes with the times. Once saving was the elixir and then spending was the elixir. The planet is endangered when growth and/or work become fetishes pursued as ends in themselves. Frank Rotering in "Needs and Limits" discusses the reality of "ecological overshoot."
