Jesus should be judged on the basis of his life and teachings, not on the basis of the church. Jesus' critical and prophetic nature is often repressed when the church becomes a social club. Unlike the prophets and teachers, Jesus spoke as the long-awaited messiah uniting past, present and future. In his book "Cost of Discipleship," Dietrich Bonhoeffer interprets the beatitudes. The first beatitude includes the change in perspective from those who imagine faith as their possession to those who describe themselves as "spiritually poor."
