I'm thinking that the president will soon be taking credit for the victory in Iraq. The president is fond of claiming that he inherited this or inherited that. Well one thing he did inherit was a victory in Iraq. We won in Iraq despite his policy not because of it. He vigorously opposed the one policy that made victory possible. The surge. By the time Obama took office, the surge had been successful. All major offensive actions had ceased. Casualties had slowed to a trickle. The Marines had either left or were in the process of leaving. (You don't remove your finest combat force if combat is still raging.) A major troop draw dawn was made possible due to the surge. The only thing that president Obama has done the president Bush would not have is to remove all of the troops. President Bush would have probably left a small force of 10,000 to 15,000 troops in place for another year. Other than that, President Obama let the Bush plan run its course. I hope he remembers this during the campaign.

I don't think we won the war in Iraq. It will take many years before the world knows if it had any impact at all on humanity. The different tribes will go on killing each other for years and years to come. That's what they did before we ever went to war. What did we actually accomplish after all of the loss of life and all of the money spent? There are thousands of Saddam's lying in wait.
Sadaam Hussein was going to outpump OPEC, in Euros, not dollars.
This is the reason why we destroyed the country.
Khadafy was about to do the same.
No one breaks the Oil Mafia, and if they try, they are destroyed.
The war in Iraq was never meant to be 'won'.
It was meant as a lesson to anyone who stands up to the Empire.

Of course we won. We pounded them into the sand and left. Winning a war does not mean we can guarantee that everyone will get along after we leave. We accomplished our military objectives. We won, we left. What happens now is out of our control.
Just curious, what do you think was the objectivee of the war?

To pound them into the sand and leave. We totally did that, which means we won.
Aha, well in that case mission was accomplished within the first 3 months? What the hell were we doing for the 8 years?
"Victory in Iraq".........I don't get it.

The war proffiteers won, we the people lost bigtime. We'll be paying for bushs blunder for the next 50 years. Hope everyone has deep pockets.

If Saddam had kept his word and lived up to the agreements that he made after his rape of Kuwait he would still be alive. I have always wondered why he did not. Why did he kick out the inspectors that he agreed to have? He had to know this would mean war and the end for him. If he had kept his end of the deal, there would have been no invasion. There would have been no multi-national coalition and congress would not have voted to go. There would have been no war. I guess crazy men do crazy things.
i think bush let usa security down waiting for bin laden to attack us so he could use it to attack iraq ;and although the attack clearly came from affganistan it was close enough to iraq/to invade for oil /i remember bush saying bin laden was not a priority /there should be a backside to mt. rushmore for worse presidents and what we can learn from the experience
Obama intiailly opposed the surge but the recognized his mistake when it produced good results.

He then copied this strategy in Afg.
This entire thread seems to be based on a false premise.
Was there vicotry in Iraq before Obama entered office? Does that mean he could have pulled the troops out in 2008 and everything would have been just fine?

Great question. Even though offensive combat operations had ended, a complete draw down at that time may have has disasterous results. You could make a solid arguement that there was still a "war." A war with no battles. Interesting concept.
