More and more when I go to a major media outlet that had it's own comment software they are now opting for Facebook for comments.  I refuse to be a member of Facebook.  It's an outlet for dummies that don't care about privacy nor anonymity.  It obviously shows how stupid and lazy the execs and editors of these news outlets are.  And not only that Facebook's interface sucks and looks amateurish.

I don't know if Facebook is a conspiracy but it sure as hell is annoying! I keep getting messages that so and so linked to me on Facebook but the connections are laughably tenuous.

Absolutely, stay away from

Absolutely, stay away from Twitter and Facebook. I suspect these are government proxy internet monitoring networks. Government, and private companies that will do ANYTHING for a buck, are colluding to turn the internet into a vast surveillance network.

This is only one aspect of a massive push by government and private enterprise to setup any and all digital surveillance schemes they can possibly imagine. There are absolutely no restrictions whatsoever.

Why and how does indifference to privacy and anonymity make people dumb, captain?

the reason social networks

the reason social networks are so successful is because humans are a social species.  we don't want privacy all the time, in fact most of us (not me) want to share just about everything we do with anyone who is willing to listen.

how can you validate that claim?  facebook is volunatry and it doesn't verify information you provide.  you don't have to provide any information at all and you can upload any picture you want or none at all.

I'm on forums and groups where the majority use handles and not their real names.  And not everyone is a "social animal". Artists, writers and musicians often like solitude to create (and practice) and may not actually be social animals.  Musicians may put on such a facade for performance reasons.  I once knew a very famous novelist who would run if you brought out a camera around him.  His publicist's picture was on the cover of his books and did the book signings for him.  He also wrote under several pen names and never published under his own name.

You may want to get over the idea that everything you do is important and needs to be shared.  This is a delusion of the "me" generation.  Just remember you are one in 7 billion plus humans.

As for the Facebook thing, I haven't bothered to sign up because I have two blogs and web sites, one under my real name and the other for my business.  So I don't know if I could sign up giving them a complete bogus info but it might be worth a try though I've heard they don't like it or will take down the page.  It be worth my time to put up a page for my business there.  I do Twitter with my business though I don't "tweet" very often.  I actually resent a world that is so crass commercial you need to do these things.

I am not attracted, and I

I am not attracted, and I know people who joined and got tired, bored or even offended.  If you want to do Facebook, go for it.  But don't pretend it is community or society.  It is just another virtual, kind of like Diet Coke as a beverage.  No nutrition, questionable pleasure and containing some stuff nobody should ingest.

people generally use handles on forums because they don't want some of the moronic things they say to be assocated with them.  in general, people are social animals and they also respect their privacy.  on the internet with social networks, the amount of yourself you reveal is completely voluntary.  none of them to my knowledge force you to post private information and make sure you're honest about it.

personally, i'm a very private individual and reveal practically nothing about my true identity.  i like the automacit screening mechanism inherent in internet relationships and my use of facebook is exactly that.  if people are looking for me, i decide if they get to find me.
