"Economics' sharpest critics regard it as an auxiliary science of astrology, a sect that sings its same little song in fervent ideological unison since the 1980s: about the holy market and the salvation-bringing unleashing of its powers through deregulation, liberalization, stripping of state power and privatization.
Classic authors like John Kenneth Galbraith are finally rediscovered... Post-autists is the self-ironic term of a movement of economists that resist the enormous conformity pressure of the discipline. They understand the economy as a social science and the human subject as more than a robot programmed for self-interest...
Exactness is impossible. The coming generation should be protected from the mono-cultural brqainwashing pursued at the universities with standard economic rational- and market models. Keynes explained 75 years ago why the economy cannot predict anything. `One cannot know anything about the world as long as the economy (meaning society) is treated as nature and the science of the economy is pursued as a search for natural laws. By their nature, systems of actions referring to one another are too complex, tool reactive and too hiostorical to be calculable according to gerneral unchangerable laws external to them.'"

That was disappointing. I clicked on the link and didn't see anybody naked. I guess I should go the the PETA site.
There was a surplus under Clinton and the economy was good, therefore surpluses are good for the economy.
Mars was in Aquarius when Clinton was born, and it was when I was born, therefore I will be a good president.
Coincidence is not correlation. Modern economics is astrology.
The basic problem of economics has always been that many of the Grand Poohbahs of economics are in fact right wing hacks, using economics as an excuse for their Let-them-eat-cake ideology.
Which is why the modern GOP sees every problem as having 2 solutions, tax cuts and privation.. er privatization.

Did you really want to see Moses naked? Ewwww
Jeremiah and some of the other prophets made some of their points by running naked through the streets. Their dire words about the coming apocalypse were not scary enough, so they went naked to really let the terror rip.
Business Schools are not funded by people who want to understand economics or have anyone else understand it either. I was surprised when I first discovered this, but not as it continued. The catechism classes at the Bible College of Business suffices for those who want to "run a business." Not if they actually want to run a Main St. business for the long term, but if you want to be a winner in Monopoly, they have your ticket to ride.
The best book on business, not part of the catechism, is Never Go Into Business to Make Money. I forget who wrote it, but heard an interview and the dope slap simplicity of the truth behind the slogan was astounding. If you put money ahead of creating a product or service of value, you will shortchange the value of your business, cheaping out your bottom line. I ran into the practical application when buying a used car. The guy who finally sold me a car quoted a price his sales manager could back up instead of trying to jack me up to a more expensive car. He explained, when we sat down to chat about my experience, that one of the big city operators had come to town and tried that, but that the multi-generational business was still here long after the fly by night huckster had left.

poly replies: It's pretty much politics operating under the cloak of science. The economist Batra refers to most economists as prostitutes. Paul Craig Roberts is more kindly. He merely says, "They have sold their souls for filthy lucre.
Economists are hired to increase the wealth of their employers. They've succeeded admirably in doing that. The continuing impoverishment of the nation and the majority of its people is irrelevant to that..
Retired Monk - "Ideology is a disease"
The opposite seems true when one sees the German chancellor acting in the present Euro crisis. Merkel or Merkozy stringently follow their neoliberal agenda with debt brakes and demolish the public budgets, especially what is left of all the welfare state posts.
Yesterday Merkel praised Italy for its radical austerity course with the usual ingredients like raising the initial pension age, cutting pensions and increasing the value-added tax. This corresponds to one of the main neoliberal goals, starving the state and the public sector with the final goal of carrying out a policy of deregulation, privatization and social cuts.
The bold type at the end of the quote is extremely disconcerting.
When the Russian Empire was overthrown and their monorchy was destroyed, it was in the name of Communism. However, soon a dictator took over and created a completely fascist, totalitarian, police state....and starved the Russian kulaks and Ukrainian farmers. Ukraine had been given its independence in 1917, but the new "Communist Empire" had no intention of letting it go.
The truth is that, that whole operation had been organized from the outside in order to destroy Russia. It was not communist. The "Communist Empire", i.e. Soviet Union financial system remained monoterist, and their people were persecuted horribly under this fascist "communism" and its monster dictator.
Has anyone else been hearing whispers about "bad crops, blah, blah, blah, etc." and consequently, "starvation possibly hitting parts of the USA this spring"? I have heard this a few times and have been shrugging off the idea.
Now, suddenly it makes sense if this is "one of the main neoliberal goals, starving the state and the public sector with the final goal of carrying out a policy of deregulation, privatization and social cuts," i.e. fascism.

I could definitely use it!
Just don't give up pleasures instead of lusts. Simplicity is not the same as austerity. Lent is a good time to give up habits, but not to confuse punishing ourselves with getting clean. Peace be with you.
