On Wednesday – the Washington state House approved gay marriage legislation – one week after the Senate approved similar legislation. Washington governor Christine Gregoire is expected to sign the legislation into law making her state the seventh in the nation to give same-sex couples the same rights as straight couples.
That combined with the recent court decision in California striking down Proposition 8’s ban on gay marriage prove that the movement for equal rights in America can’t be stopped. Let’s keep it up and strike down the federal law known as the Defense of Marriage Act next.

From my experience studying the issue in the 70's, it has been clear that only prejudice and ignorance has been in the way of full acceptance of gay and lesbian people as fully human and equal to all with all the civil and human rights that implies. That the ignorance and prejudice would be so rabid and be used so cynically has surprised and shocked me; but who expects the Spanish Inquisition?
what you should be pushing for is to get government out of the marriage business. the government should have a few rules in place like you can't marry a goat even though some liberals would argue that is taking away their civil rights. maybe even put minimun age requirement in place like no one under the age of 18 but other than they they should not be in the marriage business at all.
liberalism ideas so good they have to be forced on you

So you don't believe in equal rights for all?
Have you ever heard of the Log Cabin Republicans?......Do they deserve equal rights or not?

you must not know how to read, so let me explain, with the government not envolved in the marriage business you would be free to marry whom ever you wanted. now i did say that there should be some rules like you can't marry a goat or anyone under the age of 18. this would ensure equal rights to everyone except people who want to marry a goat.
What a load. There would be nothing were there no government, and marriage would not have any civil rights or protections because it would just be whatever the hell you decided it was, and so would anyone else be able to "write their own laws." Libertarians lack any political reality. Utopia is dreamland. Marriage is a contract, and the state is who insures contracts. Now, if you hate the state and cannot imagine democracy as us owning our government (state), I suppose you might like to reject that guy or gal and the goat, but it would be your word against theirs and whoever could win the fight might have the "right" to enforce his or her opinion on the loser. I think democracy is better.
If you want religion to uphold the contracts, you just get the priests as rulers instead of secular politicians. Churches are free to have their own standards about who they will agree to marry, but they cannot make goat marriage legal if the society does not recognize it. The rule is that the religious rules cannot violate the universal social standards as with the illegality of polygamy or cruelty to animals. Even if you think you are loving your goat.
With out the government to enforce equal rights laws for everyone as it should be done without bitching and whining from the repugnants, trying to marry whom ever you want and have that marrige reconized as legal in the United States doesn't mean shit. The government has to get involved or those who are gay and want to marry will continue to be discriminated against which the righties have no problem doing. WTF do you think this all about?
The government is suppose to work for ALL of us not those that the party of regressive idiots choose it to work for.
some of you people are really slow on the uptake. yes marriage is a contract between two people. what I am saying is that the government should have no say with who you want to enter into that contract with. just like if bose wants to enter into a exclussive contract with ford the government is not going to tell them they can't. The only time the government should be involved is when you want to dissolve the contract before its agreed upon end date.
A very naive idea.
A very naive idea.
its called freedom, i would have thought a liberal would embrace freedom not call it a niave idea. but than again liberals hate almost all freedoms except sexual freedoms.
Utter nonsense from the self-righteous. I just believe that freedom is for all, or none, and that democracy is about our collective, social, ability to govern ourselves because the alternative is to be ruled over. Libertarianism is what I smell here, a utopian adolescent fantasy that is unable to find a politics and despises the idea. We govern ourselves or others will rule over us. If you want a serious discussion of anarchism governance, I refer you to the Invisible Empire thread where anarchism is not reduced to libertarian individualism.

I also believe in freedom for all. it is the basis for the whole formation of the U.S. I am not calling for a utopia or for anarchy. I am saying that you would be more free with less government control. You do not need the government to plan your retirement or force you to save for it. you do not need the government to say who can get married and who can't . There are some things I agree we need government to take care of like national defense, a post office and post roads, immigration, interstate commerce so that no state is charging another state a tariff to sell their products and a few others they can be found in article 1 section 8 of the constitution. these do not mean that I want the government taking care of my health care or force me to support people who are unwilling to support themselves.
yes this would also include a strong city/ state government that provides a police, fire, sewer, and a few others but those a the big ones that the liberals like to go after.
But your probably also against civil rights laws or any laws that say a public business can't discriminate on color or sexual preference.
Another reason why Libertarianism is a 19th centrury idelogy.

No I am not against civil rights laws. The only people I know of that are against civil rights laws are democrats, like robert byrd, and al gore senior.
I guess you think it's democrats that are doing everything they can to restrict voting rights around this country?
Conservatism........For people who are obviously to stupid to think for themselves.
you must talking about the laws that require people to show proof of who they are before they can vote. these laws are being put in place to keep illegal aliens, the dead, and other forms of fruad out of the election process. I have no problem with these types of laws. They do not restrict the poor from voting you have to have valid id to check a library book out of the public library but not to vote does that seem right to you? the poor and the old that the liberals keep saying these laws hurt have to have valid ID's to get medicare medicaid welfare checks food stamps or any other unconstitutional government program but not to vote.

your right to be you includes my right to be free from supporting you.
