Reality TV Star Donald Trump will endorse Newt Gingrich for President today. Gingrich’s is coming off a landslide loss in the Florida Primary where he was outspent on TV ads - airing only 200 ads compared to over 13,000 funded by Mitt Romney's rich Wall Street friends. So Newt could use more than Trump’s endorsement – he could use some of Trump’s money. The Donald meanwhile still seems pretty sour on Romney, who declined to attend Trump’s debate last December.
It’s unclear why monkey-hair is getting so close to Gingrich, who has little to no chance of winning the nomination – let alone the presidency. Some are speculating it sets up perfectly for Trump to announce a run as a third-party candidate when Gingrich loses. I think the Donald just needs divorce lawyer advice – and Newt’s the guy to turn to for that.

Seriously, Progressives are not Obama devotees. While many Americans hoped for change by dint of election, experienced Progressives know that we are dealing with a big Imperial Power system and that no President can go against the grain and get a lot done. It is worth stopping the servants of power being able to do all they could, and even having the romantic idealists disappointed is better than having the imperial cultists run amok.
We do hope that other Americans who do not support empire can get past anger and negativity to think seriously about democracy instead of just withdrawing into individualism and isolation. Beyond this, most of us appreciate that there are deep cultural memes about America that need serious reflection and change, and that those memes make discussions of issues and even of democracy more complex than they are by themselves. We are all affected by the American Century Myth, and having to oppose the Culture War and the Myth of Money makes rational discussion next to impossible.
This is why I have suggested that we meet at the Pledge of Allegiance Tent to do rehab and see if we can have a republic with liberty and justice for all. Democracy is the issue, and economics is a subset, not the other way around.
Get ready for Obama II, because there is no Progressive alternative ready to win at this point. Even Rush knows that the GOPimps provide no real challenge and that if Mitt is the best they can produce, they are in trouble deep. I foresee a lot more ankle biting and feces throwing in Congress unless we can elect a filibuster proof Congress. Who knows who Obama would be or what we could do with a sane and patriotic Congress? What is clear is less about Obama than about the toxic Right.
