While America’s vast corporate propaganda ministry is running on all pistons with a pre-rehearsed attack on health care policy, 200,000 Japanese are demanding no restart of Japan’s nuclear death machines.

Pacific ocean’s bottom food chain fish sold by Japan like anchovies, greenlings, and snow crabs are carrying a body burden of cesium 134, cesium 137, strontium, and plutonium. Through bioaccumulation all Pacific tuna have measured cesium 134 and 137 in there bodies. Sure glad we all have health care!

Recent interview with Greg Palast on TEPCO misdeeds - and, most alarmingly, the low-down on exactly why and how those backup generators actually failed. Not the earthquake, not the tsunami, nothing but the simple act of switching them on.

Hi drc2!
It is absolutely astounding that the entire Pacific Ocean is contaminated with radioactive waste and it is not a leading headline over all other stories in the media. The President of the United States is silent about this world changing catastrophe, yet he has commented on his continued support of the nuclear energy industry. There are no reports from any American government agency of the health effects of the Fukushima nuclear accident on American citizens. Where is The National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration and the many other scientific organizations that millions of dollars are devoted to inform us of environmental issues and dangers? Isn't the fact the entire Pacific Ocean has tons and tons of radioactive waste spilling into it and this poison has reached completely across the Pacific Ocean an important event that needs some kind of public comment from someone in a leadership position? This is proof that the entire American system of government is completely dysfunctional. There are so many private interests involved here that no private, or government organization has brought this unbelievable world catastrophe to attention. The public policy seems to be to ignore the fact that the Pacific Ocean is now radioactive, yet billions and billions of dollars are spent in the name of "national security" to protect American life---while the Ocean fills with radioactivity. What has happened to this country that it cannot even recognize this world wide catastrophe and communicate honestly with its citizens about present of future dangers of a radioactive Pacific Ocean?

typical Japanese reaction, frozen into inability to deal with disasters. Asking for help implies that they are incapable of dealing with the problem. Translated into Japanese psyche, they see this as simply losing face(honor). So they prefer to not see the problem and not lose their face. well they'll be losing their lives and lose 1/4 of their country to the radioactive contamination.

If Obama is looking for an emergency, he should look at Fukushima, and not Syria.

Here are two documentaries about how three nuclear meltdowns occurred at Fukushima. If a nuclear reactor needs electricity to operates the controls, monitoring instruments, pumps, and valves what happens when the electricity is cut off? Seems no one thought about that possibility. Just the pressure relief valves themselves are complex electricity dependent machines that use pressurized gases to open and close assuming the valves are controlling pressure less than it own control pressures. Unfortunately, the reactor pressures were 70 times greater so the valves could not work. The design oversights are astounding. Fukushima was unable to even get 12 volts batteries to the site to open and close valves which in the end caused the #2 reactor meltdown.

Gee, Fukishima? The name rings a bell. In the deluge of news and all that "breaking," anything that is not going to blow up tomorrow will become part of the scenery. This time the smoking volcano is at the water's edge. May the Pacific protect us from ourselves. Who would'a thunk that the Japanese would be the ones to host the Big One? What if 9/11 had been the nukes on the Hudson being hit? I live downriver from Hanford.

Big trouble on the way. Toyko Electric, a private corporation, is going to try and extract radioactive fuel rods from the damaged fuel pools this November. If the make a mistake, they could release radiation equivalent to 14,000 times the amount released by the Hiroshima atomic bomb into the atomsphere with strong Pacific winds blowing to the West coast of America. Scientist Arnie Gundersen suggest if that happens move to the Southern Hemisphere. I am sure Latin America and South America will be glad to have us and forget about all the death squads we created for them. Adios!

I fully expect Tepco to screw things up and all of our worries with fracking, climate change, GMO to American exceptionalism will be of minor consequence. How can the Japanese be so capable (toyota and such) and be so inept (Tepco) at the same time.

Well, the pacific ocean will die. No more salmon, steelhead, and other pacific ocean fish. My organic "garden" will become contaminated with radio active fallout. Oregon and Washington state are one of few places habitable with the global climate change but with the fallout to hit Washington and Oregon hard, its not a place to live. So what's left?

How Obama Made Fukushima Worse

The US government organized a multi-agency stealth response in the wake of the reactor meltdowns. Friends of the Earth and others filed FOIA requests to learn how the crisis was being managed in days after March 11. A trove of emails moving between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, its field agents in Japan and other agencies show efforts to downplay concern and withhold information. Within days of the event, federal manager’s emails tallied plumes of iodine-131 as they approached America. Supervisors demanded confidentiality while maintaining a press blackout, assuring that most Americans had no chance to prepare or mitigate.

James Mangano, an epidemiologist, and Janette Sherman, a toxicologist, are expert in calculating health effects from radiation exposure. Their review of US deaths before and after the March 11 event indicates that 18,000-22,000 Americans could die as a result of radiation from Fukushima. Carried east by the jet stream, and deposited as rain and snow, uptake into people, plants and animals is primarily through inhalation, ingestion and contact. Infants under the age of one had the highest increase in reported deaths in the 14 weeks after Fukushima’s initial explosions. Increased mortality was also seen in the aged, the infirm and immune compromised.

USS Ronald Reagan sailors report cancers after Fukushima rescue mission

Fifty-one crew members of the USS Ronald Reagan say they are suffering from a variety of cancers as a direct result of their involvement in Operation Tomodachi, a U.S. rescue mission in Fukushima after the nuclear disaster in March 2011. The affected sailors are suing Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), alleging that the utility mishandled the crisis and did not adequately warn the crew of the risk of participating in the earthquake relief efforts.

Crew members, many of whom are in their 20s, have been diagnosed with conditions including thyroid cancer, testicular cancer and leukemia. The Department of Defense says the Navy took "proactive measures" in order to "mitigate the levels of Fukushima-related contamination on U.S. Navy ships and aircraft” and that crew members were not exposed to dangerous radiation levels.

Charles Bonner, attorney for the sailors, says the radiation the USS Ronald Reagan crew was exposed to extended beyond the tasks of Operation Tomodachi. Deployed ships desalinate their own water, so crew members were unknowingly drinking, cooking with, and bathing in contaminated water due to the ship's close proximity to the disaster site, according to Bonner. The USS Reagan was ultimately informed of the contamination after a month of living approximately 10 miles offshore from the affected region.

What’s Really Going on at Fukushima?

[excerpts...]

Even more ominously, Seiichi Mizuno, a former member of Japan’s House of Councillors (Upper House of Parliament, 1995-2001) in March 2015 said: “The biggest problem is the melt-through of reactor cores… We have groundwater contamination… The idea that the contaminated water is somehow blocked in the harbor is especially absurd. It is leaking directly into the ocean. There’s evidence of more than 40 known hotspot areas where extremely contaminated water is flowing directly into the ocean… We face huge problems with no prospect of solution.” (Source: Nuclear Hotseat #194: Fukushima 4th Anniversary – Voices from Japan, March 10, 2015, http://www.nuclearhotseat.com/2468/)

At Fukushima, each reactor required one million gallons of water per minute for cooling, but when the tsunami hit, the backup diesel generators were drowned. Units 1, 2, and 3 had meltdowns within days. There were four hydrogen explosions. Thereafter, the melting cores burrowed into the container vessels, maybe into the earth.

According to Dr. Caldicott, “One hundred tons of terribly hot radioactive lava has already gone into the earth or somewhere within the container vessels, which are all cracked and broken.” Nobody really knows for sure where the hot radioactive lava resides. The scary unanswered question: Is it the China Syndrome?

Following the meltdown, the Japanese government did not inform people of the ambient levels of radiation that blew back onto the island. Unfortunately and mistakenly, people fled away from the reactors to the highest radiation levels on the island at the time.

As the disaster happened, enormous levels of radiation hit Tokyo. The highest radiation detected in the Tokyo Metro area was in Saitama with cesium radiation levels detected at 919,000 becquerel (Bq) per square meter, a level almost twice as high as Chernobyl’s “permanent dead zone evacuation limit of 500,000 Bq” (source: Radiation Defense Project). For that reason, Dr. Caldicott strongly advises against travel to Japan and recommends avoiding Japanese food.

Even so, post the Fukushima disaster, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed an agreement with Japan that the U.S. would continue importing Japanese foodstuff. Therefore, Dr. Caldicott suggests people not vote for Hillary Clinton. One reckless dangerous precedent is enough for her.

After the Fukushima blow up, ambient levels of radiation in Washington State went up 40,000 times above normal, but according to Dr. Caldicott, the U.S. media does not cover the “ongoing Fukushima mess.” So, who would really know?

Dr. Caldicott ended her speech on Sept. 2014 by saying: “In Fukushima, it is not over. Everyday, four hundred tons of highly radioactive water pours into the Pacific and heads towards the U.S. Because the radiation accumulates in fish, we get that too. The U.S. government is not testing the water, not testing the fish, and not testing the ambient air. Also, people in Japan are eating radiation every day.”

Bad news....missing nuclear reactor core.

"The nuclear fuel in reactor core No. 5 was clearly visible via the muon process. However, at No. 2 reactor, which released a very large amount of radioactive substances coincident with the 2011 explosion, little, if any, signs of nuclear fuel appear in the containment vessel. A serious meltdown is underway." September 30, 2015

Antifascist, take a couple Valium's dude. Jesus, talk about ridiculous fear-mongering. They've known for years now that #2 reactor core melted down and sloughed into the bottom of the pressure vessel, might have even penetrated the pressure vessel bottom onto the concrete containment. Wow! How scary that is. So what? If you're afraid of that, you better get find shelter very quickly because that NG pipeline near your home could explode at any time and burn you alive.

I would have no problem living right outside the Fuku fence and the melted core would not even be the remotest concern. That's because I understand radiation and radiation health effects as well the science of radioisotopes and fission. You, with zero knowledge of these subjects, shake in fear. Seems to me it would be better to get educated. I'd hate to see how you would handle real dangers like driving an automobile or going to Africa to treat Ebola.

Who is the blithering idiot who claimed "a serious meltdown is underway"? There ain't enough heat there to meltdown even one month after the coolant failure. And now the cores are underwater.

And Caldicott is a fanatic and a nutcase whose entire arguments have been ripped to shreds by actual knowledgeable people. George Monbiot, a real environmentalist, sent her running with her tail between her legs after she made a pathetic attempt to debate him.

http://bravenewclimate.com/2015/06/18/complaint-about-misleading-helen-c...

http://www.monbiot.com/2011/04/04/evidence-meltdown/

http://www.monbiot.com/2011/04/04/correspondence-with-helen-caldicott/

i.e.

".. Caldicott claims: "...loss of coolant could induce a huge nuclear explosion scattering deadly plutonium...."

[FALSE]

Total rubbish. Making a huge nuclear explosion requires weapons grade material and a very, very elaborate trigger mechanism. Her suggestion that a critical mass is defined strictly by weight of material is simply wrong...."

"... Monbiot:

Over the last fortnight I’ve made a deeply troubling discovery. The anti-nuclear movement to which I once belonged has misled the world about the impacts of radiation on human health. The claims we have made are ungrounded in science, unsupportable when challenged, and wildly wrong. We have done other people, and ourselves, a terrible disservice...."

"...

I pressed her further and she gave me a series of answers that made my heart sink – in most cases they referred to publications which either had little or no scientific standing, which did not support her claims or which contradicted them. (I have posted our correspondence(4a,4b), and my sources, on my website). I have just read her book Nuclear Power is not the Answer(5). The scarcity of references to scientific papers and the abundance of unsourced claims it contains amaze me.

But it gets worse; much worse. For the past 25 years, anti-nuclear campaigners have been racking up the figures for deaths and diseases caused by the Chernobyl disaster, and parading deformed babies like a mediaevel circus. They now claim that 985,000 people have been killed by Chernobyl, and that it will continue to slaughter people for generations to come. These claims are false.

The UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (Unscear) is the equivalent of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Like the IPCC, it calls on the world’s leading scientists to assess thousands of papers and produce an overview. Here is what it says about the impacts of Chernobyl.

Of the workers who tried to contain the emergency at Chernobyl, 134 suffered acute radiation syndrome; 28 died soon afterwards. Nineteen others died later, but generally not from diseases associated with radiation(6). The remaining 87 have suffered other complications, included four cases of solid cancer and two of leukaemia. In the rest of the population, there have been 6,848 cases of thyroid cancer among young children, arising “almost entirely” from the Soviet Union’s failure to prevent people from drinking milk contaminated with iodine 131(7). Otherwise, “there has been no persuasive evidence of any other health effect in the general population that can be attributed to radiation exposure.”(8) People living in the countries affected today “need not live in fear of serious health consequences from the Chernobyl accident.”(9)

Caldicott told me that Unscear’s work on Chernobyl is “a total cover-up”(10). Though I have pressed her to explain, she has yet to produce a shred of evidence for this contention..."

Instant-runoff, you only have Ad hominem arguments to offer. I am sure you wouldn't be afraid to live by a melted down nuclear core, but that isn't scientific evidence that it is safe. And remember in the early days of nuclear power pro-nuclear propaganda claimed that a nuclear meltdown was next to impossible. In Fukushima there was three meltdowns in one day! And the article in post #79 isn't claiming that reactor core #2 is at the bottom of the reactor is new information, but the core is no longer be found at the bottom of the reactor containment vessel. You need to practice your reading comphrension rather than inserting stawman arguments into news reports that contradict your prejudices.

Huge Fukushima Cover-Up Exposed, Government Scientists In Meltdown

[excerpt...]

Fukushima radiation just off the North American coast is higher now than it has ever been, and government scientists and mainstream press are scrambling to cover-up and downplay the ever-increasing deadly threat that looms for millions of Americans.

Following the March 2011 meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, reactors have sprayed immeasurable amounts of radioactive material into the air, most of which settled into the Pacific Ocean. A study by the American Geophysical Union has found that radiation levels from Alaska to California have increased and continue to increase since they were last taken.

...The reality, however, is that radiation along the West Coast is expected to keep getting worse. According to a 2013 study by the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center in Norway, the oceanic radiation plume released by Fukushima is likely to hit the North American West Coast in force in 2017, with levels peaking in 2018. Most of the radioactive material from the disaster is likely to stay concentrated on the western coast through at least 2026.

According to professor Michio Aoyama of Japan’s Fukushima University Institute of Environmental Radioactivity, the amount of radiation from Fukushima that has now reached North America is probably nearly as much as was spread over Japan during the initial disaster.

The recent Woods Hole study also confirmed that radioactive material is still leaking into the Pacific Ocean from the crippled Fukushima plant. Cesium-134 levels off the Japanese coast are between 10 and 100 times higher than those detected off the coast of California.

Without directly challenging the U.S. government’s “safe” radiation limits, Buesseler obliquely references the fact that any radioactive contamination of the ocean is cause for concern.

“Despite the fact that the levels of contamination off our shores remain well below government-established safety limits for human health or to marine life,” he said, “the changing values underscore the need to more closely monitor contamination levels across the Pacific.”
