Subject: Become a citizen co-sponsor of the DISCLOSE Act of 2012 to end secret election spending.

Dear Friend,

The U.S. Supreme Court's disastrous Citizens United v. FEC ruling has unleashed a torrent of anonymous campaign spending into our political system. Corporations have been able to exert a massive influence on our electoral process without being subject to any accountability for that influence.

Progressive champion Senator Sheldon Whitehouse is fighting back by pushing Congress to pass the DISCLOSE Act. And he has asked the public to join him as citizen co-sponsors.

Become a citizen co-sponsor of the DISCLOSE Act of 2012 to end secret election spending.

Petitions are nice thoughts but mostly ineffective. Here in CA, petitions have become the avenues that special interests get favorable laws passed after paying signature gatherers $5 a sig. What progressive petition of any substance has effected change on the national or state level in the past few years? I understand the need to feel like you can change things but nothing will prevent the Nov election from being a bloodfest. The amount of money spent will obliterate any message.

Well YOU might be willing to just thrown in the towel but I'm not. I still believe there is hope. It is evidenced to me by the victories we HAVE achieved and it just makes me want to fight harder to change those we have lost.

Last week, powerful interests in Washington defeated the “Consumers Right to Know About Genetically Engineered Food Act'' in the Senate, denying you and all Americans the right to know about our food. Now they are at it again, trying to extend their control by barring agricultural officials and judges from being able to stop, when necessary, the planting of genetically engineered crops.

This unprecedented attack on our right to know about our food is gaining steam and we need your voice to fight back.

A provision has been introduced into the FY 2013 Agriculture Appropriations Bill that would strip federal courts of their authority to halt the sale and planting of an unapproved genetically engineered (GE) crop while the USDA assesses its potential hazards. This would allow farmers to grow potentially harmful GE crops during legal appeals of the approval process, instead of afterwards.

Labeled the “Farmer Assurance Provision,” this policy rider would:

  • Eliminate fundamental and constitutional safeguards of our judicial review system;
  • Undermine the USDA’s oversight and approval process, and weaken protections for consumers;
  • Allow powerful chemical companies to dodge reasonable safeguards against potentially hazardous GE crops.

This bill is now being debated in the House of Representatives. It is crucial that you tell your U.S. representative to oppose the “Farmer Assurance Provision"!

Additionally, if this provision becomes law, it may compel the USDA to allow all permits for continued planting of unapproved GE crops, even if previously unrecognized health risks are found. This has dangerous consequences, potentially exposing non-GE farmers to substantial damages and, due to international GE crop trade restrictions, put our nation’s agricultural markets at risk.

This provision compromises our constitutional right to know, and could negatively impact our environment and our health.

As the people of the United States continue to voice concerns regarding the faults in our food system, influential players continue to introduce their own, profit-driven interests into national policies that negatively affect each and every American. Without the appropriate supervision and safeguards, large corporations will continue to control our food safety, with a high cost to both our health and environment.

This is an unprecedented move by special interests to subvert the separation of powers so carefully laid out in the U.S. Constitution to protect all of our rights.

Thank you for taking the time to voice your concern. We can’t do it without your help.This link will work> David BancroftCampaign DirectorJust Label It

We're building a movement of concerned citizens – parents, health care workers, small business owners, farmers, and more – who care about what's in the food we eat.

In October 2011, the Just Label It campaign was formed when the Center for Food Safety filed a petition with the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to require the labeling of all foods produced using genetic engineering. Days later, we asked citizens from around the country to join us and tell the FDA to "Just Label It." More than 1.1 million Americans have contacted to the FDA urging them to label genetically engineered foods. Ask others to sign on at

Feb. 17, 2012 8:45 am I saw you used this site MrsLee. There are other petitions and action tools associated with the site, too. I am on their mailing list.

Another reference tool is the congressional committee assignments rosters. I used to have a handbook for that information pre-internet age when I was on the Communication & Education Committee for my local. By knowing the member's names, states and districts they represent, and cross referencing with the sources website identifying their funders, it's easy to emphasize the conflict of interests.

Local concerns should be identified through local media. If not, volunteering to conduct a poll to be published or aired may get their interest. Surveys or polls conducted at the library are not too bad either.

Subject: Don't let Republicans steal the election for Mitt Romney

Dear Friend,

They've gotten so brazen, Republicans are actually publicly bragging about the attempt to steal the 2012 election.

Pennsylvania Republican House Leader Mike Turzai (R-PA) publicly admitted his party passed a voter ID bill to help steal the election in the important battleground state for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

I just joined CREDO Action and asked Sen. Patrick Leahy, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to stop Pennsylvania Republicans from stealing the presidential election by holding federal hearings immediately.

Click on the link below for more information and so you can take action, too.

Why the Kochs Really Embraced Criminal Justice Reform...

It looks like the Koch brothers have scammed us once again.

When news first came out that Charles and David Koch -- the Koch brothers -- were supporting criminal justice reform efforts in Congress, many of us thought, "Wow, they're actually doing something good for once."

And for good reason, too.
