Thom has not been remiss on the subject of the TTP. This segment of a Big Picture from back in December pulls no punches.
But if I'm any judge, this should be the topic of every program from now till October. We are looking into the jaws of National Death.
Here is the letter I just wrote to President Obama:
I spent $5000 of my meager $22000 last year on reelecting you and as many Democrats as possible. I was delighted and relieved upon your success. I was thrilled and uplifted by your 2nd Inaugural Address. I remarked that it would be one of the few great historically, likewise your SOTU this year. Little did I realize then what viper's egg it included.
But I know now. The Trans-Pacific Partnership "Free" Trade Agreement that you are hoping to slide through under cover of darkness is the most insidious betrayal I can imagine. 600 corporations have free access to it, but the Congress of the United States is blocked from the draft texts, and is asked to give you "Fast Track" to pass it sight unseen by them.
I know now from leaks that it would turn our Congress into a relegated, powerless formality, like the City Council of Benton Harbor, Flint, and Detroit under Rick Snyder's "emergency managers". Our laws would be subject to rejection by three corporate lawyers. Our Constitution would become, to use Jefferson's term, "a thing of wax".
But this will not stand the light of day, as I'm sure you know, else you would not so conceal it. Sir, I'm glad you were re-elected, if for no other reason than Kagan and Sotomayor. But I grieve for you like a father would his convict son.
Know this: we WILL stop the TPP. And when we do, I don't see how you can ever hold your head up again.
With profound sadness and regret —
John S. Carpenter
