The Million Marijuana March has been going since 73 when Yippies Dana Beal and Cures-Not-Wars started it in NYCity. Since then it has spread world wide in over 230 cities from a hundred people to several thousand. I call it the Global Ganja Gathering or just 3M, this year it will be May 2, 2009. Usually in SF its a day of hemp booths and speakers, music, food and a March @ 4:20. Not much mainstream press and usually not a lot of harassment unless its an election year or you act like its legal and taunt the cops. Thats S.F. - Okies might call the National Guard...

"Some folks want to be like an ostrich,
Bury their heads in the sand.
Some hope that plastic dreams
Can unclench all those greedy hands.
Some hope to take the easy way:
Poisons, bombs. They think we need 'em.
Don't you know you can't kill all the unbelievers?
There's no shortcut to freedom."

Thousands March in May Day Protests

Ending a war: Inventing a movement: Mayday 1971

1971 May Day Protests
On Monday, May 3rd, 1971 one of the most disruptive actions of the Vietnam War era occurred in Washington, DC, when thousands of anti-war activists tried to shut down the Federal government in protest of the Vietnam War. The threat caused by the May Day Protests, forced the Nixon Administration to create a virtual state of siege in the Nation’s Capital.

Reminiscent of Blocking the Government in DC 1971. My first taste of fear gas, my first boot in the side trying to sleep in the Lincoln Memorial. Seeing the inscription on the wall being drug out into the drizzling rain. Still brings fond memories. More about the $12, 3 fingered lids out of a sawed off school bus from Indiana. I split before the troops Sunday, in pouring rain. Headed to Pittsburgh, caught a ride to Breezewood, truckstops and motels. Picked up then by two guys in a Hearst Rent a Truck. Half full of cases of pepsi about 20 or so hippies were sitting on passing bowls, Got to Sumerset when the drivers said they ran out of gas. Sat there a while and then all hell started breaking loose. Cops, detectives, helicopters, state troopers, suits. Right on the PA Turnpike. Everybody out. I stashed my sack behind a sheet of plywood bolted to the truck. Still raining, ID's and empty pockets. I'm seeing things go onto the cop car I can't believe. A syringe, pills, bags of pot, joints. 17 and soon to be caged for ?. Back into the truck, someone barked to keep the garage type door open. Off to a rest area and do it all again. As soon as the truck started moving someone reached up and closed the door and fired up a few bowls of opiated hash. At the rest area the various cops are pondering. Then one of many more godthings... out of the blue, no good reason, not even logical. Everybody back in the truck one very large Pa. State Trooper ordered. Can anyone drive this another ask. Back on the Turnpike I found my stash and loaded some bowls. I got off at my exit, last I heard the truck was heading to Lansing. Fück Ma Bell! Thousands were arrested and Unconstitutionally jailed inside of RFK football stadium. Each prisoner sat and formed a huge peace sign. I found out later they settled in court for $10k each. I got wet and a high ping pong ball number kept me out of the jungles. Hell of a year for adventures.

Thank God for Hippies

"Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe."
~ Frederick Douglass

Liberty for All with Credit Cards... No checks! NRA bought mandatory minimums, now they disregard the ATF ruling. Why is that not a surprise? What is a pleasant surprise is Nader, Ron Paul and Kucinich , comrads in arms supporting the Occupy Wall St. protest. Just like the Ganjawar makes money for both sides, including many many lawyers, reform groups and Growers. So we should not wonder why it's lasted so long and will remain until the reformers get real and overturn the CSA. Naomi Klein makes a good point that our demands are based on how big Occupy Wall St gets. Stopping the drug war is on the list but they need more visibility. Two weeks and not one NORML or MPP or even a Ganja leaf. WTF? I'm getting up in years and on the left coast but still support those braving the weather.

Marijuana marchers take to the streets CBC.ca‎
Toronto is sometimes called the big smoke but that took on a different meaning on Saturday as thousands gathered downtown for a weed walk.

It's called the Global Marijuana March, and it created some major traffic disruptions for drivers in the downtown core. Parts of University, Bloor, Yonge and even Church street were all closed for part of the afternoon.

Organizers of the event say the march is a celebration of what they call cannabis culture.

Even though possessing marijuana is a criminal offence, police say no one at the event was arrested or charged.

Marijuana Activists March On Cinco De Mayo
On a day that is often known as an ‘alcohol drinking holiday’ to many people across the world, many marijuana activists took to the streets to participate in the 2012 Global Marijuana March. In my home state of Oregon, there were rallies in multiple towns all over the state. After reading news reports around the world, it sounds like the worldwide protest was successful at getting attention to the very important issue of marijuana reform. Below are some media reports from various outlets around the globe:

Green Autumn: Marching For Marijuana In Brazil from notsofasteddie
By Steve Elliott Saturday, May 5, 2012

Editor's note: Brazilian activist Sergio Vidal, a good friend of Toke of the Town, is the author of Brazil's very first cannabis grow book. Here, he shares with us the progress being made in his country in marijuana law reform.

By Sergio Vidal

Many marijuana marches will occur today, May 5, worldwide. In Brazil, the movement to legalize marijuana just started to gain power in recent years. The first march took place 10 years ago in Rio de Janeiro.

After many years of struggle and diversification of activism, the movement has grown significantly, in spite of repression. Only last year Brazil's Supreme Court (STF) dismissed an action in respect of Marijuana Marches. The judges of the Supreme Court unanimously decided that marches and other demonstrations for change in laws and policies on drugs are absolutely legitimate and constitutional. full story...

Our kids are counting on us to reverse austerity.

According to UNICEF, even in the world's richest countires, children remain “the most enduring victims” of the recession. In the last six years, 2.6 million more kids have fallen below the poverty line, and more than half of them live right here in the United States.
