I hope this gets forwarded to Thom.
He might know someone that can check the idea for validity.
I've been thinking about the strange behavior of the GOP, and how it kind of looks like heavy metal poisoning.
Mercury poisoning has some peculiar symptoms, including "false familiarity", the sensation of having met someone before, or having been somewhere before, when that isn't true.
Now, that's something to think about. A toxin that affects your mood, anxiety, and ability to think.
Lead poisoning is well known for suppressing brain development, leading to impulse control problems, and sudden rages.
What if all the lead we foolishly pumped into the air via leaded gas was poisoning people?
You'd be affected based on exposure, diet, and your genetic resistance.
This is testable; we stopped lead in gasoline in 1996. Before that we where only weaning off of it since 1976.
If the whacky Conservatism we've seen since Reagan was caused by the introduction of leaded gas, the poisoning would have started to take effect about 1930 as cars increased; the kids affected by that wouldn't have started to vote until 1950.
Which is when the Conservative Movement really took off, right?
As the people got older, they absorbed more lead. And grew more Conservative.
We banned leaded gas entirely in 1996.
The kids growing up without constant exposure to lead are just now old enough to vote.
And it seems to me they're more likely to be Independents.
What we need is rigorous Statistical research that shows the link between leaded gas and Conservatism.
If we CAN prove it, what does that mean?
Well, it could mean the wave of Crazy is passing. That the Conservative Movement will start fading as they can't replace their numbers, and the oldest, most poisoned victims die off.
Treatment is unlikey to help adults much, but Chelation therapy will keep the lead levels down in our children.
The lead is still in the soil, and the dust. And getting rid of it would require finding a plant that sequesters heavy metals and genetically engineering a form of grass that absorbed the lead, then mowing it, baling it, and burning it to concentrate the lead for burial.
Otherwise we'll have to be on our toes from now on.
But if we can protect the next generation from being susceptible to Rush Limbaugh's kind of ranting... it's worth some effort.
