"Renaissance Thinking About the Issues of Our Day"
a few days ago, a woman called in very angry about cuts to the Headstart program. This was understandable since it has always been considerable a good, productive use of fed $$$...She was a single parent with financial limitation...i think that the rest of her comments just came out in the course of her attempting to make a point. She got pregnant again with twins and decided to abort one of them--kind of seems particularly grotesque. i didn't know that they did that...now i'm wondering--since she claimed to be a teacher why she wasn't more careful about whom she had intercourse with? Why did she pick another guy or perhaps the same one, who wasn't responsible enough to father his own child. Naturally, i blame him--or them--as much as or more than her. There are other issues as well...but why didn't Thom question her irresponsible activity for getting herself into this position? or can't we anymore? I say like the president we should. Let us all be responsible for our actions--most especially fathers! who at least should be paying child support!

But exactly why blame him "...more than her"? Why "naturally"? Yes, it was her "irresponsible activity" and her most irresponsible choices. How many years now have women had the pill? In a consensual relationship a woman gets pregnant these days in the U.S. (and other "advanced" countries) either because she wants to, because she is ignorant and careless or because she is looking for a provider. Yes, let us all be responsible but why "most especially fathers!"? Maybe when there's a male pill, maybe when men have ovaries and a womb, maybe when men have the choices that women now have...
Do I have compassion for this woman? None, ziltch. For the child or children who must grow up in the care of someone so careless, so selfish, so ignorant? Yes.
.... Maybe when there's a male pill, maybe when men have ovaries and a womb, maybe when men have the choices that women now have...
Men do have the choice.... vacsectomy. Simple and safe procedure, effective and reversable.
Why not make the option of a vacsectomy more available for men?
Why not encourage men to make sure they are not going to father any unwanted children?

Reversible, northlander? Perhaps you have performed the procedure. Or maybe "reversable" is different from "reversible."
Vasectomy reversal is not a simple procedure that any general practitioner can perform safely and routinely in a matter of minutes in his office, nor does it guarantee success. It is in no way comparable to just getting off the pill. I wouldn’t advise any male to have a vasectomy unless he were absolutely certain that he would not ever want, or ask for, a reversal. Here you can read more about reversal:
http://www.webmd.com/infertility-and-reproduction/vasectomy-reversal-vasovasostomy
Spinal or general anesthesia is commonly used to ensure that you remain completely still during the surgery.
The chances of vasectomy reversal success depend on how much time has passed between the vasectomy and the reversal. Over time, additional blockages can form, and some men develop antibodies to their own sperm.
Vasectomy is widely available, most any physician would be able and willing to do it. It's cheap, quick and virtually painless.
I’ve addressed this subject several times on TH:
I've been making that point for what seems ages now. You can read a couple of my earlier posts here:
http://www.thomhartmann.com/users/alberto-ceras/blog/2012/04/why-do-you-have-children-aka-why-have-children
http://www.thomhartmann.com/users/alberto-ceras/blog/2012/04/could-tbyf-equal-tgif
But you're right in that few, at least here on TH, fully understand the situation and no one seems ready to embrace a very reasonable solution - sterilization. A vasectomy is quick, easy, virtually painless and 100 percent effective. Women, too, can be sterilized but not so easily.
If more men opted for the procedure then techniques would improve and reversal would become easier.
If folks want to get so upset about abortions and "killing" zygots, then vasectomy is the ideal answer.
