As the title says, why can't we apply that 12.5% worth of payroll taxes on "unearned" income? In a way they are labor earned...sorta. When I talk about capital gains and such with my conservative friends, they always say complain how its not "unearned," because folks who make most of their money off capital gains spend a lot of time trying to find ways to earn from that. OK, fine by me, its just another form of labor, so then why not tax that labor like our labor gets taxed?
The republicans are still singing the same old toons and it frightens me a bit. We are going to be disappointed with Obama's 2nd term as well if we don't rise up and demand reform. Each of us can share the blame for any disappointments in our President's 1st term. While we supported and campaigned for him in 08, we immediately abandoned him and became complacent again. We left him to fend for himself amongst the wolves so shame on us. Obama could be one America's greatest presidents if we make him one. He cannot do it alone. Nothing changes things in America without a movement.
Dear Thom and Bernie,
Reading this article on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, is it obvious that Obama is being surrounded by corporate lobbyist, and is not hearing the voice of labor. The way this thing appears to be structured would be a race to the bottom, with foreign companies setting up shop here and applying their home labor laws to their plants in the USA. If we try to enforce US labor safety protections or minimum wage laws, they would call that anti-competitive and could sue the US.
