Many lobbying groups, especially those that depend for support on the fears of folks (Israeli or otherwise), try to make Congress do dumb things, Senator McCain. To answer the Senator’s question, Mr. Hagel should respond; however much I consider my own hindsight as infallible as my foresight must have been, your opinion, of course, may differ.

Living on the edge

I never would have thought I would ever be living on th edge with my wonderful daughter, with her looking daily for a full time job and existing on partial part time work having lost her home and used up all her savings trying to go to school and get a new career in her 40S and finding that the private school which promised jobs did not have very many. They certianly could not find them for the load of students they move through the course of Medical Assistant and collect tons of money from the loans they all take out.

How to effectively protest inequality.

I was watching an old movie (from the 1930's) last night with Loretta [something] in it. She was playing a woman from an immigrant family (Swedish) who gets elected to Congress. In the climax of the movie she nearly loses the election because of a poor decision she made to except a ride from the man who had been painting for her father. During that ride the car breaks down and she is obliged to spend a night in a hotel room with him -- something that immediately brands her a slut to anyone who knows about it in that time period.

Rich'ville Bin Laden

Reading archived newspapers sometimes yields amusing statements from the past that seem so relevant, like this one I found in an Indiana paper May, 1899*.

"For fear that W. may not follow us closely we will drop the feather of rhetoric and pick up the crowbar of fact and assure him of our intention. We hope he will be loaded for it."

So here we go.

"W., how long has this been going on?"

Wayne LaPierre's Recent Pronouncement's

At one point during the recent hearings on Capitol Hill Wayne LaPierre says, “....nor do we believe that government should dictate what we can lawfully own and use to protect our families....” Wow. He does not get that it is precisely the role of government to do exactly that, to decide, to legislate what people can lawfully own and use. Wake the hell up, Wayne! That is PRECISELY the roll of government.

Save money by rolling your own cigarettes

The cost of cigarettes is outrageous these days but luckily we still can buy tobacco. Long ago they were $2 a pack but now you won't find cigarettes at that price. Stores are currently selling them for $5 a pack and it's quickly rising to be a dollar more. Did you know that some cigarettes are selling for ten dollars in states like California, New York and New Jersey? Of course, it depends on which brand you by.

Central New York Fire Department raffling 30 guns in 30 days in April.

The Howlett Hill Fire Department in Central NY has a raffle that is giving away 30 guns in 30 days in April. While most of the guns appear to be hunting rifles and shotguns, it seems to me to be just in bad taste to hold such a raffle in light of Newtown and most importantly Webster. Wonder what the Webster fire deparment (about an hour from Howlett Hill) would think of such a rafle. Looking into it today to ensure that people who win the guns will be background checked before receiveing them. I live directly across the street from this fire department and used to be a member.

Left vs. Right easier to sort out through lens of Social Liberalism and Economic Liberalism

Recently I heard some lectures on European history about the struggle amongst Social Liberalism vs. Economic Liberalism vs. Monarchy/Royalism vs. the Communist Experiment-- and it really gave me a way of thinking about politics and political evolution that seems more practical. It seems to have given me some tools to try to sort out political positions that we in the USA reduce to Left versus Right.

Can the Presidency Regain Its Integrity After Trump?

Thom plus logo Even those of us old enough to remember have probably forgotten that in the spring of 1979 the Attorney General of the United States appointed a special prosecutor to look into his own president's ownership of his peanut warehouse, to make sure that he wasn't, in any way, making money from his presidency.
