There's an ad on the right side of the page that leads to phony virus warnings... call a Microsoft tech. I could not even close the page in IE, the popup kept popping back up. I had to shut it down in task manager. I know the ads rotate so I don't think all go to the same website.

Here's the page. The popup said roughly the same thing

BSOD : DllRegisterServer failed with the error code 0x80040201

Windows Defender Error Code: 0x80073afc

0x000000CE DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATIONS

Error Code 0x800705b4 when Starting Windows Defender

Window's Defender Time Out Error code 0x800705b4.

Error code 0x800705b4 when trying to open Windows Defender

Windows health is CRITICAL!

It's what I get for trying IE. I never have those problems with Firefox and AdBlock.

I think the ads are placed by google and Thom gets a cut, the ads are based on what you search for.

It's a google adrotator but I never use google and I block all links to most of their services... so it's not based on my history.

Any idea what the ad was supposed to be for?

I forget the name of the site on the ad. I refreshed the page about 50 times and the rotator never put the same ad back up. Obviously it's google's fault for not vetting the ads. It must have had a redirect on whatever site it went to.

All of the banners you see, are based in your surfing history and cookies.

I am in the UK and use many UK websites, so I see British banners for the most part.

If you visit lots of "automobile" sites, or "political" then that is what you will be served.

I'm pretty meticulous in not having any web history. I have Ghostery and AdBlock and NoScript. I have no history at Google. I routinely delete cookies. I use private web searches like startpage.com or ixquick.com. AdSense ads typically might use that history and combine it with webpage content, but if there's no history then they may try and post an ad related to page content (as they do with gmail).
