Our scientific understanding of the damaging and lifelong effects of toxins like lead on the health and mental development of children has come a long way in the last three decades. Unfortunately, many of our government’s policies have not. Today, millions of children who live in public housing and federally-assisted housing are subject to lead regulations that set an allowable blood level that is three to four times what is currently recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
But under the current regulations of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), action is not required to reduce lead levels in a home unless blood levels in a child reach 20 micrograms – four times higher than what is recommended by the federal government’s own scientific studies.
Taeyana Brown, 2 months old, had her temperature taken during an exam with Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha in Flint, Mich.
A new database of children under 6 who may have been exposed to lead in Flint’s water, a group she said she believed could number 8,000.
New concerns surfaced Friday when officials said that recent tests of unfiltered tap water in Flint had found levels of lead in some samples higher than what filters distributed to residents were designed to remove.
At the center of those efforts is Dr. Hanna-Attisha, whose research documenting a spike in children’s blood lead levels forced dismissive government officials to acknowledge the water crisis last fall.
Studies have linked elevated lead levels in blood to learning disabilities, problems with attention and fine motor coordination, and even violent behavior.
As the nation wrings its hands about the plight of lead-poisoned children in Flint, thousands of other children throughout Michigan face similar challenges because of exposure to the toxin.
Even low levels of lead exposure can cause irreversible brain damage in children under age 6. That damage can include a reduction in IQ, increased risk of attention deficit disorder and increased aggression and impulsivity
LeeAnne Walters, a resident who says her 4-year-old son has been found to have high lead levels in his blood, holds a water filter that shows signs of lead particles from her home in Flint, Michigan, October 6, 2015. Residents of Flint lauded a decision Thursday to switch the city to its old water source after water from the Flint River was linked to rising lead levels in the blood of some children.
Thousands of children in Flint are now facing the lifelong and largely irreversible consequences of lead poisoning due to state and local leaders' criminal disregard for their health.
Flint residents have taken to social media calling for the arrest of Governor Snyder (using hashtags such as #InvestigateGovSnyder, #IndictGovSnyder, #ArrestGovSnyder, #PureMichigan) who appointed the Flint emergency manager directly responsible for the tragedy. Meanwhile, according to Democracy Now!, "Michigan activists are planning to hold a tribunal on Flint water poisoning and the continued shutoffs of drinking water in Detroit, in the coming weeks." Federal prosecutors are now investigating the saga.

America's lead poisoning problem isn't just in Flint. It’s everywhere.
The data that is available shows that lead exposure is a pervasive issue in the United States. In some places outside of Flint, more than half of children test positive for lead poisoning.

Houston County does stand out: In 2014, it reported the highest rate of lead poisoning in the nation of any counties that sent data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
“You cannot reverse the irreversible brain damage inflicted on every single child in Flint. The damage is permanent. They are ruined for life….”

Charged Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder with poisoning kids.
"Labeling children as “brain damaged” is also unjust. “Poisoning is obviously a loaded word,” “I’ve spoken to many parents in Flint, and I’m concerned because I don’t want children there defined by what happened to them.”

a Virginia Polytechnic Institute environmental engineer
“If it was just lead, that would be manageable, but lead exposure also correlates with extreme poverty, low resource availability and poor schools,”
~ Robert Fischer,
social scientist at Case Western Reserve University
expert on study evaluation who has monitored the lead problem for decades.

Cannabis Prevents Brain Damage - 03/08/00
The disclosure that marijuana's prime active ingredients can shield human beings from brain damage was all over the media the second week in July. HIGH TIMES had already been covering the development, by an Israeli/American drug company called Pharmos of a marijuana-derived nerve-preserving medication which is well on its way to market.
Dr. Axelrod duly reported that the toxicity of the nerve poisons was greatly reduced, thanks to the anti-oxidant properties of THC and CBD. "We have found that cannabinoids are very powerful anti-oxidants," emphasized Dr. Aidan Hampson, a biologist on the project, for reporters. "In fact they appear to be more powerful than vitamin C or vitamin E."
From time to time, I say that the suppression of medical marijuana is murder. This is not quite correct. It is actually mass murder. It has caused the deaths of countless thousands of people. This report is just one more instance of medical science providing evidence of its complicity in the crime of suppressing medical marijuana.
Israeli researchers has found that THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, may arrest some forms of brain damage in mice. Pharmacologist Josef Sarne of Tel Aviv University found that a minuscule amount of tetrahydrocannabinol may protect the brain after injuries from seizures, toxic drug exposure or a lack of oxygen.
New research suggests cannabis could have some benefits when administered regularly in a highly potent form. Most "drugs of abuse" such as alcohol, heroin, cocaine and nicotine suppress growth of new brain cells. However, researchers found that cannabinoids promoted generation of new neurons in rats' hippocampuses.

The Hype: Brain Damage in Dead Monkeys - 03/18/00
In the report, Heath concluded that Rhesus monkeys, smoking the equivalent of only 30 joints a day, began to atrophy and die after 90 days [that's 2700 joints, or an average of 1.25 doobies per hour 24 hours a day, for 90 days!]
Heath opened the brains of the dead monkeys, counted the dead brain cells, then took control monkeys who hadn't smokes marijuana, killed them, and counted their dead brain cells. The pot smoking monkeys had enormous amounts of dead brain cells as compared to the "straight" monkeys.
In 1980, Playboy and NORML finally received for the first time after six years of requests and suing the government an accurate accounting of the research procedures used in the famous report:
The facts: Suffocation of Research Animals
The Heath "Voodoo" Research methodology, as reported in Playboy: Rhesus monkeys were strapped into a chair and then strapped into gas masks and given the equivalent of 63 Colombian strength joints in "five minutes, thru the gas masks" losing no smoke. The monkeys were suffocating!
When NORML/Playboy hired researchers to examine the reported results against the actual methodology, they laughed.
They discovered, almost immediately, that Heath had completely (intentionally? incompetently?) omited, among other things, the carbon monoxide the monkeys inhaled during these intervals of 63 joints in five minutes...

Cannabis Shrinks Tumors: Government Knew in 74
The active ingredient in marijuana appears to reduce tumor growth, according to a Spanish study published on Wednesday. The researchers showed giving THC to mice with cancer decreased tumor growth and killed cells off in a process called autophagy.
