Citigroup's Football Madness
Citicorp executives are using $45 million corporate jets for luxury family vacations in Baja at $12,000-a-night hotel rooms, all courtesy of bailout money from you and me.

Banks across America are laying off Americans by the tens of thousands and replacing them with workers in India, The Philippines, and imported foreign highly-trained white collar workers who'll do work for less than half the prevailing wage for Americans.
Meanwhile, most of the banks getting our bailouts have overseas tax shelters to hide their profits; the practice is so pervasive that worldwide corporate tax rates have dropped from 38 percent in 1993 to 26 percent last year, and a significant number of Fortune 500 companies in America pay no corporate income taxes whatsoever. (While we have the second highest corporate income tax rate in the industrialized world at 35 percent, we also have the second lowest percentage of taxes actually paid because of tens of thousands of loopholes drilled into federal tax laws by lobbyists, and these offshore tax havens.)
But our problem isn't "greedy" bankers and corporate executives. The problem we have is structural.

Show Your Support for Single-Payer Healthcare--HR 676 Today!
On Sunday, House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said on C-SPAN that he would oppose any comprehensive health care reform in 2009. And the next day, Judiciary Chairman John Conyers reintroduced HR 676, the single-payer health bill that was co-sponsored by 93 members of Congress last year, including James Clyburn.
Congressman Clyburn needs to know that he cannot take single-payer health care off the table. So on Friday, Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) together with its allies in the progressive community have organized the Single-Payer Moment. We need to flood Congressman Clyburn's DC office with your phone calls asking him to keep single-payer on the table and to co-sponsor HR 676.
Air America and progressive radio talk show host Thom Hartmann will be helping us get the word out. He's heard live and he will be taking calls (866-303-2270) about single-payer healthcare in the last 2 hours and urging folks to do 2 things:
Call Congressman Clyburn and ask him to whip up support for HR 676: 202-225-3315
Call your member of Congress and ask that they support and co-sponsor HR 676: 202-224-3121
For more information about HR 676 and TODAY"S Single-Payer Moment go to www.pdamerica.organd www.afterdowningstreet.org

Should Gitmo be Used for Those Who Raped and Pillaged our Economy?

Years ago, reporters for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer are reporting this week, the FBI knew that home mortgage scams were being perpetrated by banks all across the country. They told the Bush Administration, and were denied agents or resources to pursue their cases.

Two years ago then-New York Governor Elliot Spitzer tried to prosecute banks – along with governors or attorneys general of all 50 states – for just these types of crimes and the Bush administration used an obscure Civil War era law to stop him.

Today we learn that the very hustlers who helped destroy our economy, the so-called “investment bankers” at Morgan Stanley and AIG (who have gotten billions of our taxpayer dollars in the recent bailouts) will be getting their bonuses this year, to the tune of $1.13 million in cash for the 400 brokers at AIG.

But while they should be denied their bonuses, the criminals for whom we should re-open Gitmo are Phil Gramm, John Boner, and the other Republicans who changed laws reaching back to the Republican Great Depression of the 1930s to prevent exactly these types of scams.

Reopen Gitmo! Get it ready for the Republicans!
