Thanks to Thom for addressing, if in passing, human overpopulation during today's Free Speech TV program. Rarely does anyone in the media have the courage to do this. I'm a retired neuropsychiatrist and, now, arm-chair neuroscientist, who's written a free e-book PDF by the above title. Just Google the title. What I've discovered in my extensive literature searches fits with my 40 year experience in medical practice: population density stress is the basic cause of ALL human "diseases of civiization", none of which are found in traditional living hunter-gatherer populations. Furthermore, in the many animal crowding experiments done since the 1920's, but rarely widely reported, these animals reach a density and state of disruption of parenting behaviors beyond which ALL reproduction ends and the entire population goes extinct. Sperm counts among Western men have fallen by 50-60% over the past 43 years. Infertility among American couples has incresed 100% in 34 years: 8% in 1982, but 16.7% in 2016. At current rates of fertility loss, we may reach an extinction event as a species by 2,100. The only solution is as Thom described: empowerment of women. Only an immediate movement to voluntary one-child famillies can prevent a catastrophic extinction event. thanks, again, Thom, for this wonderful website.

The greatest gift that science has made to humanity is spermicidal corn and we trashed it. You say "ALL reproduction ends and the entire population goes extinct." I say Oh happy day!

Maybe you’ve never heard of it. Back in 2001 it was all the rage and then the do-gooders took over.

GM corn set to stop man spreading his seed

Special report: GM crops debate

Scientists have created the ultimate GM crop: contraceptive corn. Waiving fields of maize may one day save the world from overpopulation.

The book "Ishmael" by Dan Quinn is a fantastic read that discusses (among other things) overpopulation and how it happens. He links it to the mass-production of food saying that global populations expand to meet our food surpluses in only 2-5 years.

I think, whether we'll admit it or not, many have children out of the fear of dying alone. No one wants that. If we're going to have spermacidal corn we should also have compassionate dying centers (end-of-life hospice facilities) staffed with committed and compassionate care-givers who will make sure that no one need die alone.

And I'm with Alberto; bring on 2,100! It can't come soon enough. Because religion and fear will keep any effective, self-determined, proactive, catastrophee-avoiding changes in our reproductive habits from going into effect pre-apocalypse. Wish I was wrong but I'm not. We're frightened idiots certain that we're living our lives just as we should.

Thanks for the reasoned response, BenDorigan. I've promoted VHEMT several times here on TH but I don't think anyone's been convinced. Too soon old, too late smart as the saying goes.

I won't read "Ismael" nor will I be reading "Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart" saving my limited time for re-reads of those masterful thinkers and students of human conduct such as Shakespeare, Dostoyevsky, Conrad, Tolstoi and others.

For anyone who might be interested:

First time posting here. I've enjoyed and agreed/disagreed on some posts. Any chance anyone caught the name of the author/book title by what I heard as Leonard Schnelling? About left/right sided brains and developmental societies?

What? That defies logic, can you provide a link to these studies?

I'm sorry that I can't help you, Molly I've tried several Internet searches but no luck at all. I did find that recent studies have debunked much of the left/right side dichotomy, i.e.
