We can't make America "America Again" because we have never, ever lived up to our own expectations, not even our forefathers. That last is not as nasty a statement as some might think. Children never do. Fathers and mothers never do. Compromises are made. And expectations do change.
But the object is to keep getting closer to the best expectations, defining 'best' often being the debate. History usually offers a twisted path, often because there are always those who wish to turn around and go back, or stray way off the path.
One thing is sure: we have doubled back, even gotten off the path, lost in the woods when it comes to elections.
Did our forefathers want gerrymandering? Yes. But it would be hard to argue they wanted parties perfecting computer models to squeeze out enough votes in states while deliberately knocking voters off the rolls using raw data lists to make all their tactics more effective. Nor deliberate targeting of ethnic voting groups that tend to vote in what those who knock them off the rolls consider to be politically incorrect ways. Would they have approved of hackable electronic voting machines built by one sided, party connected, partisan voting machine companies using proprietary software? Hell, no, they weren't big fans of political parties at all, or what they referred to more often as "factions."
It would be hard to argue they wanted foreign influence deceiving the public, attempting to hack voter rolls, steal digital mail to give those they want to win an advantage. It's also clear that only one candidate has ever clearly, in public, asked a foreign country to do this, and the last one who got caught asking fellow citizens to do anything similar resigned rather than be impeached. Would they have approved of British interference? Hardly.
But, despite this, we have a hard, constant, push back to just shrug it all off, consider it 'fake news.' Even though the head investigator belongs to the same party we have a demand that we all consider this nothing more than a losing party's vendetta. "Thou protests too much," doesn't even close to how suspicious all the noise being made to just stop, stop, stop it is.
Every argument I hear, I read, insisting we stop only convinces me we need more.
We are heading the wrong way, whether you think Hillary cheated, Trump cheated, Putin cheated or they all cheated. Allowing the cheating to continue, to worsen, only helps us get so deep in the woods we will find the paths the Soviets and the Germans took. Just announcing something "fake news," or we shouldn't continue to investigate, we being herded towards Winston's 1984 memory hole. Forget about it. Move on. Nothing can be done. Trump never said... what he did say. Trump said more than he actually said.
I believe all this demands more investigating, more public exposure, and if possible more indictments.
Example... "It's going on so long, nothing's proven yet!"
An investigation lasts as long as necessary. You only find out the results after. This one is shorter than Watergate, Benghazi, Mailgate, Birther-gate... all those investigations Trump and his party loved so dearly, and some they have had no problem continuing. But, "Not enough is proven" would be closer to the truth, for we already have admissions of guilt. Maybe that's why all the panic, all the public hand wringing: those might lead to more being proven. Let's wait and hear what they all are! Insisting we stop sure sounds like guilt speaking to me, and sure indicates we need to at least triple down.
Example: "We're not pure. We have interfered in other nation's elections!"
You... are... right! Let's include that! Let's widen the investigation!
Other elections have been stolen...
You know, you're right. Let's include that! Widen the investigation!
But that would include Democrats...
Good. Widen the investigation. Maybe ya'll will actually get to "lock her up," but others may share the cell. When it comes to bending and the soap I'm betting on Hillary. Like her, dislike her, probably the only truth I've ever heard spurt like so much pooh spewing from Trump's lips is she is indeed tough.
Sidebar time: why do we celebrate such prison events? Can't they take prisoners convicted of lesser crimes who get turned into prison bitch and ferment them into hardened criminals? Every time someone who talks tough about prison's child gets abducted, raped or murdered maybe they should understand what they laugh about, think OK, probably contributed to that horrible crime. Yes, like voting issues, we create a lot of our own problems with counterproductive attitudes, including demands to move beyond or ignore such things as Russian interference, Crosschecking voters off the rolls, election fraud...
Back on point; point being... the more they talk the more they make my point for me. We should vastly increase the scope of the investigation. This could be a time to take a lot of big swings at election fraud. I have been writing about, debating about and working on election issues since Gore. This is our chance: handed to us by Putin and Trump, to do what we can about election fraud. We have started by investigating Russian interference, but there's so much more.
For the first time in years I am proud our nation is looking into these things. Expand away, please!
Solutions? Well, they're really another issue, and require the biggest picture we can get first. But until we investigate then uncover as much as possible this will continue, this will get worse. Which is exactly what those who object the loudest to pursuing all this want.
Inspection is a column that has been written by Ken Carman for over 40 years. Inspection is dedicated to looking at odd angles, under all the rocks, and into the unseen cracks and crevasses, that constitute the issues and philosophical constructs of our day: places few think, or even dare, to venture.
