In Exodus, you learn that the Hebrew slaves were required to give one-fifth (twenty percent) of their production to Pharoah. My usual tax rate was around thirty percent, so I and many others like me are being taxed MORE THAN SLAVES. After working for thirty years, I figure I was working for the government for ten of them, and nobody says "Thank you for your service" to me.

Congrats for being in that tax bracket drj! But what you fail to mention are that all those tax dollars that allow you to stay in heady bracket actually in fact contribute to your continuing to make enough to carry on (and I don't care at what level you want to take) with whatever it is your doing.

Tell us you haven't gotten your monies worth......I dare you.

Challenge accepted. Two issues come to mind: 1) We have a military budget equal to the military budgets of the next twelve (or so) countries of the world combined. Some of our weapons systems are not desired by our military either but forced on them by congress wishing to get good contracts for a home district. 2) Speaking of Congress, we have been through 8 years of a deliberately inactive congress which does not work full time and which cannot pass many meaningful laws when they do work. Why should I have to support such indolence?

My concept of a slave says they have no income. How are they taxed?

So drj you want to kibble about how you're tax dollars are spent? Join the crowd. You want to argue that congress wasn't done anything in the last eight years to further the interests of the country? Once again, join the crowd.

But that's all rather beside the point isn't it? Whatever knit picking you want to indulge the fact remains however disfunctional it may all seem or how tenuously all the threads that hold it together may be, all those dollars you lament over really came back to you multiplied enough times that the state ( i.e. society ) needed some back so you could/can continue to avail yourself to do the same the next year. You would not have made that money without the under laying support from our society, and I may add, that over blown military.

You may be right: by spending so many billions on the military, we have diverted funds from things like curing cancer or curing diabetes or curing mental illness that I was able to have a medical practice for many decades.

Ah hell drj, look on the bright side. If you'd had all those cures the planet would be even more populated and in worse shape than it is now.

What Do Democrats Really Want?

Thom plus logo Thomas Friedman, the confused billionaire, told us decades ago that "free trade" is what made the Lexus a successful product when, in fact, it was decades of Japanese government subsidies and explicit tariffs that did so.
