If the 200,000+ people who turned out on Saturday for the "Restore Sanity/Fear" rally don't vote on Tuesday, what's the point? If anything, the message to the nation was to visualize that what we must do as a people to move this country forward. This mid-term election needs to be not so much about party but about country, our country. It needs to be focused on the future not "taking back the country" to a time when the rich got richer and the marginalized (middle class, the poor) got even more marginalized.
If the agenda of the new congress sworn in in January 4th involves the following then we will be definitely going "backwards":
- Repealing Health Care Reform (without changing it for the better)
- Repealing Wall St. Reform (the outcome should be obvious)
- Extending Bush Tax Cuts (let's borrow some more money from Red China)
- Enacting Spending Cuts (which ones? where? what's the plan?)
Of course the untold story of a Republican/Tea Party take over is the specter of the House's use of the subpoena. We all remember how well that went the last time the Republicans held the House. Endless, mindless and a waste of valuable time with hearings after hearings. Did you forget about those investigations? White Water, Vince Foster? Shake the cobwebs out of your head. You know and I know what an extraordinary waste of the people's (nation's) time and more importantly, their money. There were two reasons these investigations went forward and failed. The criminal investigations of the Clinton administration were based on spurious and bogus charges, manufactured by Clinton's right-wing opponents for political purposes; and second, that the Clinton White House consistently refused to fight these attacks on a principled political basis, because of the weakness and political cowardice of the Democratic Party and liberalism as a whole. If and/or when the the Republicans take over the House again, we are in for more of the same. Oh goodie.
On Saturday, Stewart and Colbert's mish-mash-and-brilliant rally on the Mall with the Capitol dome in the background could not have better made the argument for tuning up an often rusty skill, listening. With the election of our first black President, it seems as if some of us as a people have suddenly gone deaf to reasonableness and truth. The "Fair and Balanced" cable "news" network of the Republican Party has masterfully played on their audience's inability to hear real truth. They got so good at it to the extent that it's viewers actually think (I know it is hard to comprehend) they are hearing the "truth." As Stewart said:
The country’s 24 hour political pundit perpetual panic conflictinator did not cause our problems, but it’s existence makes solving our problem that much harder.
The Press is our immune system: if we overreact to every little thing, we make ourselves sicker. If we amplify everything, we hear nothing!
The louder we get, the less we hear the "other." That is the message to take away from this gathering in October. The real truth lies somewhere in the middle and down deep I believe we can sift through the noise and find it. Fox lives for fear. Fear is it's message. Factless and baseless innuendo is Fox's bread and butter. But wait, We the People are better than that aren't we? We are thinkers. We have the best interest of the other people of this country at heart. We know better. We were brought up to know better. We can see through Fox's agenda, can't we? So tomorrow, bring someone to the polling place with you. Get involved for country not just for party. If just for party and nothing else, I'm afraid it will be a pyrrhic victory at best no matter which party winds up in the majority. Don't vote against your best interests.
and so it goes...GO GIANTS!!
