In my never ending quest to subject myself to torture, I watched Dr. Charles Stanley last Saturday night just to see what his latest cause celebre was. If you aren't familiar with the esteemed minister some facts are in order. He runs a church that has over 14,000 members. His wife of 44 years divorced him a decade or so ago because he'd been ignoring her (her own words) and cited a broken marriage. Maybe that's why he doesn't preach too much about marriage any more. So, the other night what caught my attention was his incredible attacks on Obama and what the President is trying to do to help us in these rather lousy days. No, he never mentioned Obama by name but it was glaringly apparent whom he was referring to throughout his dreary rants.
Tomorrow we will be posting a video to talk in more detail about what he said regarding the political nuances he hinted at and our rebuttals to everything spouted by him. But today I just wanna go over the biblical verses he cites on his website to back up his nonsense. He posted about 14 different bible verses as sources for 14 different prayer subjects his sheep should adhere to.
I'll list the prayer topic, bible verse, and the proper interpretation in my own words in bold font, of the actual verse. The verse or part of it will be in quotes. I'm only going to discuss some of the verses because I found myself getting depressed over how ignorant this guy was concerning proper biblical interpretation. And yet he has a doctorate in religious studies or whatever nonsense he's supposed to be an expert on.
On his website he began by saying:
"In the early part of last century, liberal theology began to penetrate the churches and seminaries of America. Church authorities began to doubt the truthfulness of Scripture. They asserted that only part of the Bible was inspired by God, but that it contained some errors. They also taught that it was outdated."
Well that's because deceiving shepherds like you take verses out of context, misapply others, and are clueless regarding the original intent of the various writers who had specific reasons, agendas, and certain groups of people they wanted to address. 'All of the bible has been written to us but not all of it is for us' - and that quote was taken from the very conservative Liberty Bible College - the late Jerry Falwell's school. It's also interesting that out of 20 weeks of individual bible verses he cites as sources for prayer, 15 of them are out of the OLD Testament! But I begin my evisceration with 2 verses from the new testament.
The Rapid Erosion of Our Liberties Galatians 5:1
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free."
This verse has NOTHING to do with liberties from a political standpoint. Paul, the writer, was talking about freedom from the Levitical Law that Jesus himself overthrew with the new covenant
Increasing Unemployment Philippians 4:19
"and my God will meet ALL of your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus"
Paul wrote this in gratitude to some disciples who'd given him money in his time of need. In other words Paul was saying "you folks helped me and God will help you for being so kind". It has nothing to do with an entire group of unemployed people relying on God rather than government sponsored programs to assist them in these serious economic times.
The Financial Crisis · Deuteronomy 8:18
"But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today"
Holy crap! Does he mean that those of us who have gone after criminal banksters have actually gone against God because he's blessed them - I mean those cold blooded vampires make most of their money from things that harm the rest of us such as bad debts, derivatives, and naked short sales.
But according the Stanley, God is actually blessing them? No, this verse applies to the ancient nation of Israel BEFORE Jesus came along with the new covenant.
Killing the Unborn · Psalm 139:13-16
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb, etc."
Definition of Psalms - sacred songs or hymns and NOT literal translations to be taken as historical fact. But if God really did create everyone in the womb, it leads to some very serious problems regarding God's ability to create in the first place. George 'the war criminal' Bush or Adolf Hitler? Those 2 names are perfect reasons for abortion. And what about all of the deformed kids who have been born? Maybe God should leave creation to the doctors experimenting with stem cells and just try to teach Dr. Stanley the proper way to use the bible.
Departure from the Biblical View of Marriage · Genesis 2:24
"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and they will become one
I've spoken about this before - it's used to bash gay marriages. In a previous video I said the term 'wife' was used for 'sister' because that's all there was that was available in that period of time to marry. Now, according to my way of thinking, how is marrying your sister acceptable in God's eyes but gay marriage is not? In that same video I've talked about how Genesis should be interpreted and a literal translation is NOT the way to do it as ole Chuckie does.
But all of this bullshit is from a guy who claimed God didn't want any of us to retire and especially NOT collect Social Security. Well shit, if I had over 14,000 blind followers who gave me money every week, I'd never retire. But the one thing I would do that Chuckie doesn't do, is that I would never take verses out of context and I would explain FIRST why a verse was actually written. IE - what was behind it or the motivation of the writer for putting the words down in the first place. It's called proper exegesis. And then, once you define the exegetical reasons for the verse you turn to the hermeneutics reasons for the verses - IE, any relevancy for the 21st century person.
But hey, what do I know? I'm just a layman and not a minister...
