It was Carters decision to give away our strongest aly that is the source of all the trouble. The Shah was relatively progressive towards women and kept religion out of the government

The US has made so many blunders in their foreign policy. The overthrow of Mossadegh, of Allende, of Saddam Hussein, etc. I know that Saddam was relatively progressive toward women in Iraq, as well. It was his sons who were rapists.

I lived in a suburb of Cairo in 1981-83. The Middle East was messed up then and will probably always be. At least in our view. Under the Shah, Iran had a strong middle class. It is religion that got in the way. I am in favor of us spending more time working on the USA and less time meddling in other countries politics. Bush kept saying that he was "bringing Democracy to the Middle East". But all of his allies in the Middle East were Kingdoms. Palestine democratically elected Hamas. Egypt democratically elected the Muslim Brotherhood. Now it is a military controlled government. They are not just fanatical about religion, politics also.

Always wanted to go to Egypt to see the Pyramids, etc. I flew over it once and saw the sites from the air...probably about 30,000+ feet in the air. I remember the stark contrast between the Nile, the green on both sides and then the barren desert areas beyond that. Prior to reaching Egypt, flying over the Mediterranean Sea the plane was buzzed by two military jets, one on each side...very loud roar.

I certainly agree with you on everything else you said. I believe that what Bush, and their ilk, means when they say "democracy" has nothing to do with real democracy. They are just as deceiving in their language in just about everything else they say.

Quote Legend:Bush kept saying that he was "bringing Democracy to the Middle East". But all of his allies in the Middle East were Kingdoms.
Wish I could put that on a bumper sticker! All of the US's so-called democracies are really either Kingdoms or right wing dictators.
