Thomas Jefferson said: “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

I suggest everyone concerned might want to consider a less destructive approach: “The tree of liberty requires some serious investments from time to time financed by taxes on those among us with the means to pay for those investments, and we should only take up this “blood of patriots and tyrants” bit as a last resort.”

Thomas Jefferson who owned over 200 humans, black humans and said of them to be an inferior race of people ,best suited as slaves.

Thomas Jefferson to once wrote a letter to a friend, that the best investment was owning a black man.

Thomas Jefferson who had 10 and 12 year old boys whipped for refusing to get up before the sun and work hard labor in his nail factory.

Thomas Jefferson who as a member of the US government gave arms and money to the French to put down the black slave revolt on the island of Haiti, terrified ithe rebellion would spread to the southern states,

Thomas Jefferson accused of being a serial rapist of young black children.

Need I go on. This is one of Americas founding fathers, that history have reinvented and made an American icon.

Thomas Jefferson who write 'all men are created equal', unless of course they were black.

Historian David Brion Davis said that in the 1790s, “the most remarkable thing about Jefferson’s stand on slavery is his immense silence.” And later, Davis finds, Jefferson’s emancipation efforts “virtually ceased.”

The Virginia abolitionist Moncure Conway, noting Jefferson’s enduring reputation as a would-be emancipator, remarked scornfully, “Never did a man achieve more fame for what he did not do.”

This is the man Hartmann constantly refers to as the gold standard of Americas hertitage.

OK, zapdam, I get it. Thomas Jefferson was a hypocrite. In a few hundred years, I will bet some of the things you and I now believe will be regarded as equally ignorant.

But that's not the point I was making. I just want all of us on all sides of these discussions to keep in mind how meaningless a few tax dollars are compared to human suffering and blood in the streets.
