There currently is a debate in Congress about the future of the expired estate tax law. If anyone doubts where the interests of Senate Republicans lie, nothing demonstrates it better that Senator Jim DeMint’s proposed tax reforms. He proposes abolishing corporate taxes, estate taxes, and income taxes, and replaces them with an 8.4% national sales tax. This would effectively end estate taxes for the rich, lower taxes for corporations and the wealthy, and shift the tax burden to the poor and the struggling middle class. Corporations and the wealthy are currently paying as a percentage of taxes collected only half what they paid in the 1980’s. Under current law GE and Exxon paid no income tax last year. I believe that this philosophy of “take from the poor and give to the rich” represents the true values of the “compassionate” conservatives.
