A few days ago my 4 year old grandson came home crying from daycare. We know 4 year olds hear everything but can't always comprenend what is being discussed. His mother is caucasion, and his father is african american so he is mixed...and a little confused. He said he was crying because "if Donald Trump becomes President, all the black people will have to go back to Africa...and I don't want to go to Africa, and I'm brown anyway, not really black...and you can't come with mommy"...and the sobbing continued as she assured him that won't happen and everything will be all right.

This issue couldn't be more clear. Whatever was actually said at daycare, it is a reflection of the consciousness promoted by the fear that drives the Trump campaign. Trickle-down ignorance and hatred inciting a mob mentality. Where does it stop? Race? Religion? Hair color? Eye color? For some, it's all OK as long as it's someone else, some other minority, some other religion...never thinking it could be them some day. They think Trump will be the tough-guy, the businessman that will smack the world around and make them feel safe again...which is actually the opposite of what would happen.

So Trump supporters, just wait...wait until it's you getting smacked around...or your grandchildren.

Steven, that is so sad... very few people think about what this kind of thing does to our children. If my daughter said something like that, I would respond with stories about Martin Luther King Jr. to help highlight that there are more people that love than hate. It's a scary thought for a little kid, I would not have been able to handle that as a kid... it's just that we can use inspiration and good examples to inspire a deep sense of confidence that the good guys are out there. I have a very childish view of the Trump vs. Bernie phenomenon, I call it the war between sociopathy and empathy. Make more empathy and sociopathy can't win. This being said, a lot of my students are nervous about this too. I always tell them to work on being the compete opposite of the person who says things like that. I can't cross the professional line but, I encourage confidence when I can. I hope the little guy isn't too upset, but, I am so sorry you had to deal with that. No child should ever have to worry about that... I don't know what to say other than my heart hurt when I read this. Goddess Bless.

Louise,

Though I understand the sentiment and the compulsion for the deletion I'm not a fan of censorship unless it's spam. Trolls are trolls be they from the storm front, the energy industry or the military complex everyone will need to face and deal with it with sooner or later. While I don't want to speak for brother Steven, I dare say this isn't the first time nor the last he or his off spring will need to face the out right racism or the institutionalize white privileged barriers placed in their paths.

It is sad though that 50 years after the 'supposed fact' of equal rights we are still fighting for the same damn things. How long do you think before Steven has to give his young son the talk?

Rs: I appreciate your comment, and I agree that this is very likely he will have many obstacles to overcome. The point I was trying to make is that the Trump message doesn't help dissolve those obstacles, but instead enforces them.

My wife is a woman of color, immigrating from the Bahama's into 1965 New Jersey. Her entire family was bullied because of their accent...still English, but "different" English...by both black and white Americans. And yet they all overcame that type of ignorant social rejection and have become successful, prosperous adults with loving families.

So I agree, there will be barriers and they may never be completely gone. But we all can still seek to affect the conciousness of our country in a positive way and maybe, just maybe, those barriers will become stepping stones for our children.

This is sooo typical of the left. Newsflash, we all have obstacles to overcome. Life is full of things/moments/situations that offend me. I just do not let them get to me. Steve, perhaps your grandson will be a perfect fit for Emory University in Atlanta Georgia. The students there are having emotional breakdowns from just seeing Trump 16 written in chalk on the sidewalks.

Sorry Steven I meant to get back at this a few days ago, but stuff kinda just kept getting in the way. The thing about Trump is; he has only brought to the surface what has been the toxic under current of the American psyche since the reforms of the mid 60's. If one looks clearly at any of the (what?!) 2 dozen candidates that started this election season for the gop, there's nary a one that says anything that is fundamentally different than the other except in how the very same ideas are couched. ie. in the language used. What Trump has done is shown the raw edge of it is all. It is the same message what has been nurtured and massaged by the right wing for nigh on 40 years and more. I think it rather funny everyone is running around shocked! Simply SHOCKED! at how ugly it is. While in reality it's the same as it's always been just minus any of the flowery veiled language.

I only wanted to say I prefer it all out in the open so we can face it head on rather than have this unseen and unrealized (by most) under tow that keeps dragging all us out and down. And if I can play with metaphors some more; I don't care if they want to march around in their colored robes beating their breasts as long as they don't wear hoods.......I WANT to know who mine enemy is, clearly and in the open.

When I was much much younger I idealized the thought that the grandsons of our world would see a much different landscape than they face today and yet still those grandsons will fight many of the same battles all over again beginning in 2016.

It can be dispiriting.

Keep the faith.
