Just finished listening to the looney woman who claims that most American parents know that french fries are bad for you. Her ignorance of the challenges of acquiring quality food for one's children is highly evident. These kids are marketed to, actually targeted, by the big names in food production industry. What parent, even though it is their job, can compete with the insidious, multi-billion dollar marketing plans of Big Ag? Their children refuse to eat what is good, throw tantrums etc. and chose in their own childish manner, what looks fun, exciting, tasty (to be read as high fat high sugar). What parent will put up with this ad-nauseum? Ultimately they will (often due to the marketing of Big Ag to them as well) acquiesce.

The rise of childhood obesity, contrary to this idiots assertion that obesity is a complex issue, is directly parallel to the addition of high fructose corn syrup to soft drinks and nearly all other foods, which directly parallels the subsidizing of the corn industry. Can you say double corporate welfare? I dare you to read the labels on the food you buy consistently. It will, or should, horrify you. (On another note, humans cannot digest fructose so high fructose anything is bad for you...fructose ferments in our gut and produces...? Carbon dioxide gas.)

Watch Jamie Oliver's "Food Revolution" to get a clear idea of what is really happening and the challenges we as a nation face to correct this. It is one mans effort to educate and remodel the school food program in one county is West Virginia. Why West V? The county he chose is reputedly the fattest county in America. It is mind blowing to hear and see the reality of the school lunch program. Did you know that the school lunch program receives most of it's food from the federal government? (Food surpluses from the subsidized big Ag industries, eg. cheese, sugar, fatty burger meat (about 40% fat)). This stuff is dumped by the food industry because it can't be sold at the market to the consumer. Who gets it in the back door? The USDA in the school lunch program support system. Why? because the schools, underfunded and financially strapped, have a really tough time sourcing wholesome food for their kids. There is no supply chain for it. It is a huge challenge for understaffed school districts to revise the entire school lunch menu. Often it cannot be done by one person, it requires review by local legislative authorities, most of whom b.t.w. have no understanding of nutrition or nutrition science.

All in all what I am saying is that with a recent study identifying half of young adults (18-25) as having heart disease and greater than 1/3rd of America children being pathologically obese we are faced with a public health crisis. I am an RN and I know the face of this epidemic. The financial cost and the social costs are staggering. Single payer health insurance or not, there will be a stunning number of deaths related to this within 10 years. No amount of money or reductionist science will fix it. There is no pill, no magic gene (as if you could afford gene therapy, hah!), nothing other than revising the way America eats. This is not controversial, as the liars and obfuscators will tell you (westonaprice.org). A whole food, plant based diet will save America, nothing less will work. There are mountains of evidence to support this and no substantive science to refute it. If you don't believe me ask yourself this question, "Why do 3/4ths (yes, three fourths) of the world NOT have heart disease?". Why do emigrants to America without heart disease develop it after ten years here, while their family members who stayed in the "old country" not develop it? go see tcolincampbell.org.

If you believe the food industry (westonaprice.org) go ahead and eat the fatty cheeseburger and other trash that will cause you a slow and painful death, and don't forget the amputations and blindness that accompany diabetes! What a great time retirement will be! Serial hospital visits, recovery from strokes, cardiac events and increasing difficulty getting around as you go through serial amputations, slowly taking more and more of your limbs off to keep you from getting gangrene as your veins and kidneys slowly fail due to the damage from obesity related diabetes and coronary disease. Since modern medicine can keep us alive ever longer you will have the opportunity to see yourself deteriorate and suffer even longer than previous generations. Your loved ones will be there to watch too. What a great family bonding experience. Don't let anyone fool you. Obesity is not complex, It is simple, we are marketed to by a huge and powerful Agriculture industry that spends tens of millions of dollars on psychologists and lobbyists and ads to tell us to eat the stuff that makes them the most money, NOT what is best for you to eat. We eat nutrient poor trash and expect good results? Puleeez.

Thom plus logo As the world burns, and more and more fossil fuels are being used every day planet-wide, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels passed 416 ppm this week at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. In the 300,000 years since the emergence of modern humans, carbon dioxide levels have never been this high.
