The Taxpayers - NOT Exxon - will be paying to clean up this Oil Spill!

The photos of suburban streets and backyards in Arkansas flooded with thick oil from ExxonMobil's ruptured pipeline showed horrifying damage. But despite the fact that Exxon owned the pipeline, the oil, and the mess, they won't be the ones paying for cleanup.

Tell Congress to close the loophole that lets Exxon off scot-free!

The tar sands bitumen polluting Arkansas neighborhoods looks, smells and is used just like oil. But, under current law, it's not classified as "conventional crude oil." That means the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund -- paid for by Big Oil companies -- can't be used for cleanup efforts. That leaves all of us taxpayers on the hook.

Tar sands oil is one of the fastest growing sources for our country's fossil fuel addiction. But it's incredibly corrosive, putting those pipelines at even higher risk for devastating ruptures like this. In the face of these facts, it's unconscionable for Congress to let this loophole cost taxpayers billions for Big Oil's mistakes.

Demand Congress close the oil spill loophole today to make sure Big Oil is on the hook for all the damage they cause.

Canadian Tar Sands Extract is not crude oil. It's Bitumen Tar, more closely related to coal tar than it is to crude oil. The bitumen is diluted with volatile solvents to make it resemble oil so it can be transported through pipelines. The dissolved bitumen tar is more dangerous than crude oil in that it very high in sulphur making it as corrosive as the most acidic of "heavy sour crude" oils. And since it is dissolved in and diluted with volatile solvents, when Bitumen spilled and exposed to the air, the solvents fume off and evaporate, releasing clouds of toxic flammable gasses. Once the solvents are gone, the bitumen no longer resembles oil and will not float, so it sinks and spreads beneath the surface of water bodies, until it settles into a murky mess at the bottom and is for all practical purposes impossible to clean up.

Here is a excellent article explaining about the nature of Bitumen and the safety risks involved in pumping it through pipelines. http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/aswift/tar_sands_pipeline_safety_risk.html

Here is another excellent article about the July 2010 pipeline spill of Bitumen into the Kalamazoo River and the ongoing cleanup effort.Spill from Hell: Diluted Bitumen: Poisoned air. Sunken gunk. A clean-up nightmare. What we're learning from the oil sands 'DilBit' dump into the Kalamazoo River

How Do We Take Back the Military From the Billionaire Owned Military Industrial Complex?

Thom plus logo Democrats (Bernie & Lee) in the senate proposed legislation saying what the Constitution already says: that Trump can't go to war with Iran without congressional authorization. Every Republican on the committee, except Rand Paul, voted against it.
