On Friday's show the head of the Steelworkers' union, an ex-Canadian, declared that Canada's Conservative Party was the nation's version of the Tea Pary. This is highly innacurate. Canada's Conservative Party is more like the US Democratic Party. It supports social security and single-payer health care. The head of the Steelworkers' union also described the Canadian Conservative party as bringing in legislation supporting voter suppression. This is ludicrous. The Conservative government passed legislation that required voters to present proof of identity when voting. That proof included a choice of 18 pieces of legislation. Canadians can vote by showing a driver's license, a passport, or two pieces of identifaction including two utility bills showing both the voter's name and address. Nothing could be easier. If the Conservatives were attemping to bring in Republican-style voter suppression then they failed miserably. Over 60% of Canadians voted - one of the highest turnouts in over 40 years.
