Our daughter was diagnosed, after a long year of suffering, with Celiac Disease. In her case, it's not just an intolerance but is toxic and has affected her liver. In reading a recent book, there was a suggestion that more and more of the population is suffering from this disease because of farmers altering their wheat crops to produce more gluten in their wheat. Is there any truth to this?

I would also be interested in any information, as I have recently developed an intolerance for gluten also.

I have been GF for about 3 years. I feel there are other things in our diets that might hurt us besides gluten (IE: if gluten can cause allergic reaction in the small intestine; why cant something else in food cause allergic reactions somewhere else? I believe the reason DR cant do anything for me is because the whole damn industry is run like a business (if you dont respond to the off the shelf drugs, they leave you to die slowly). Have been suffering from severe acid reflux all my life, but for the last 7 years, has been manefesting as inflamation which causes heart attack symptoms (by inflaming the major nerve that goes thru the intestines and heart and lungs; or so one DR said).. Although year into it, the blood test was negative.. I stuck with it because it seemed to help a lot when I first went GF.. Acid blockers helped a little the first year or two, but now cause too much pain to use.. I took an alternative medicine thing called ALCAT (blood test thta looks for immune reaction to 300 foods).. and for 3 months have had fairly dramatic improvement.. Today I eat a very restricted diet (sometimes wonder now if this is part of the problem; cleaning VEG so thouroghly that the natural yeasts and bacteria are gone from my diet)..

Good information can be found on the Web sites for naturopathic medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and homeopathic medicine. When my friends have quit eating gluten, their hair has grown back! Several grains have gluten and gluten is used as a thickener. Discover all the names of gluten as used in packaged food and avoid those products--better yet, buy only fresh fruits and vegetables and grass fed animal meat. Also use probiotics to return the gut to health.
