How often have we heard the phrase, "guns don't kill people, people kill people?" It's a piece of NRA propaganda that's been repeated so often over the decades that many people now consider it true without truly thinking about it. It demonstrates the power of marketing, especially the power of marketing over decades.

At the time of the Newtown shooting, a similar massacre occurred in China. In China, the criminal used a knife. In Newtown, the criminal used a Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle. In The Newtown attack, 28 people died. In China, no one died.

In both cases, the criminal motivate was to kill as many children as possible. The main differences were the weapons used and the fatalities caused on one side. Knives are slow weapons that require a great deal of effort to kill someone. Guns kill with the quick pull of a trigger. Those deaths in Newtown were caused by the use of a gun.

Yes, guns DO kill people.

As so often is the case with conservative propaganda, the idea that "guns don't kill people, people kill people" is completely wrong and backwards. Of course guns kill people. That's why people own guns.

In this, as in most cases, conservatives use marketing to push propaganda which is the opposite of the truth.

Here in this country they like to try to tell me that a woman who is raped and strangled with her own underwear is morally superior to a woman who has to explain to an officer why her attacker has a bullet hole in his chest.

Here in this country they like to try to tell me that a woman who is raped and strangled with her own underwear is supposed to accept it as God's will. Why do we need guns when everything that happens is God's will anyway. Having a gun will only delay one's trip to heaven. Who would want to delay that? Silly Christian conservatives.

Here in this country gun owners like to think that their so called, "right to own guns" is more important than the effect those 300,000,000 guns have on public safety. More frequently its the rapist or other perpetrator with the gun and the victim with the hole in the chest. Now I suppose we will switch from colorful language to statistics to prove that guns are good for people.

Another reason to drastically limit gun ownership has been underscored yet again this last week when it was pointed out that 75% of the guns used in the Mexican drug wars are purchased north of the border.

I am sick to death of hearing people talk about their "right to own guns" and as many guns as they want. And then to hear them state over and over how nothing else but their "right to owns guns" matters in any way. Let all these gun fanciers speak to how to truly stop the carnage. More guns? More loopholes? More assault rifles? More hand guns, long guns, short guns....?

What if the woman that saved her life by killing her rapist was an atheist?

The Supreme Court Broke Politics - How Do We Now Reform the Supreme Court?

Thom plus logo We complain about the state of American politics; about a mentally ill billionaire in the White House and a Republican Party crawling with hustlers and conmen, and a few in the Democratic Party as well. The complaints are legitimate, but most people don't realize why the situation is as bad as it is.
