CA could have been our Saskatchewan - how the leeches won

Twice this week a single payer healthcare bill has failed to pass in California. What's going on - and who's really pulling the strings in Sacramento? You would thing a largely Democratic state government could pass a single payer healthcare bill - right? Wrong. What's really behind California's inability to act?

The Governor of Arizona is waging a new war - and it's not about trying to find President Obama's birth certificate, but it does have to do with Unions. What is she trying to do now - and how will it effect the citizens of Arizona?

The Good, the Bad and the Very, Very Fuliginously Ugly

The Good! 38 of the world's top Climatologists. The Bad! East Haven, Connecticut Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. You may remember Maturo making the news last week for his stunning statement that he would eat a taco when he went home to reach out to the large Latino community in East Haven. And The Very Very Ugly! Alabama State Senator Shadrack McGill. According to McGill - the Bible is quite clear that increasing teacher salaries would only lead to less-qualified teachers.

Left & Right Agree...No Indefinite Detention

Congressman Jeff Landry (R-LA, 3rd district) joins Thom Hartmann. When I was 13 years old, in 1964 - I remember going door-to-door with my dad campaigning for Barry Goldwater. But that was when the Republican Party was different - A LOT different than it is today. That was when the idea of the United States as a war machine that should bring democracy to the farthest reaches of the planet to shove our way of life on others down the barrel of a gun was unthinkable. And most relevant to today - that was a time when the thought of indefinitely detaining Americans who might be suspected of terrorism would have been unthinkable to Conservatives. And besides, that wasn't what Barry Goldwater - the Republican nominee for President in 1964 - believed in. He would have been outraged. This was a Republican Party that rallied behind Dwight Eisenhower - and elected him President of the United States twice in 1952 and 1956. Eisenhower ALSO did not believe in an all-powerful military-security complex - famously saying THIS in his "Cross of Iron" speech in 1953.

Full Show 1/31/12: Voters Tricked in Florida Primary (candidates receive no votes)

Thom discusses how voters are being fooled in to believing they're voting for people, but they're really voting for large special interest groups. Also discussed: the UN's warning of increased poverty due to rapid population growth, election fraud allegations against Newt Gingrich and Thom's "Daily Take" on how Republicans and the media are rewriting Pres. Obama's first term in office.

Population & Energy - Is Mankind's Darkest Hour Here?

Eli Clifton, Think Progress joins Thom Hartmann. The planet is screwed. In a new report just published - The United Nations is warning that rapid population growth - which will likely see the number of humans living on the planet explode to 9 billion by 2040 - will condemn billions more to a life of poverty. The UN's "High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability" cautions in the report, "We run the risk of condemning up to 3 billion members of our human family to a life of endemic poverty." By 2030 - the UN estimates the world will need to produce 50% more food, 45% more energy and 30% more water to sustain more people on the planet. The key is energy - because without energy - you can't produce food or distribute water nowadays. And needing to produce 45% more energy from fossil fuels to sustain 9 billion people might be impossible, as more and more scientists admit that peak has been reached worldwide. So what does all this mean for our crowded planet - and what can be done about it?

Did the Gingrich Campaign Commit Election Fraud?

Brad Friedman, The Brad Blog joins Thom Hartmann. Just when you thought the Gingrich campaign couldn't face any more bombshells. See how Newt may be facing some new hurdles to sleaze his way through.

The MSM Media's Love Affair with Politicians Who Spew Lies...

The mainstream media has had a long-lasting love affair with politicians who spew lies and misinformation. When will they break it off and start standing up for the truth?

The Good, the Bad and the Very, Very Melanocomously Ugly

The Good! Crédit Municipal de Paris. The 375-year old French bank has made the decision to cancel the debts of many of its poorest customers. The Bad! Rick "Don't Google My Name" Santorum. One of Santorum's go-to policy proposals over the GOP primary season and his entire career has been to limit the payments victims of medical malpractice can seek through lawsuits. And The Very Very Ugly! The Wall Street Journal. The WSJ recently published an Op-Ed piece written by sixteen prominent global warming deniers with various - and minimal - scientific backgrounds - including the likes of oil company executives.

Your Take/My Take - How about Buddy Roemer?

"Your Take - My Take" is YOUR chance to send in your questions, comments, rants and observations about anything we talk about here on The Big Picture or during my radio show. Our comment tonight comes from Nate on the Thom Hartmann Facebook page. Nate has some ideas about presidential candidates and special interest groups. He says..."Thom, you are still supporting Barack Obama, one of the largest recipients of these corporations, special interests, and other special interests. Why don't you stop toting the Democrat Establishment and get behing a candidate truly free to lead. Why don't you get behind a candidate that does not have a Super PAC, does not take a penny of PAC money, and limits all contributions to 100 dollars per person? Buddy Roemer is not bought by these special interests. He should be invited onto your show every week to promote his campaign."
