We pay for Social Security retirement and disability. When Bill Clinton targeted the disabled, it was (with extraordinarily rare exception) simply ignored by "liberal" media. Obviously, this was the first step in the agenda to phase out Social Security entirely, one part at a time, the way that welfare was phased out. Clinton slashed benefits and ordered the disabled to "find jobs." This went very badly. Who could have guessed that there would be so little demand for disabled, seriously ill and dying workers? Outside of the occassional attempt to claim that no one in the US is really disabled/seriously ill, that they're just slackers, America's dead apathy said a great deal about this generation. This could indicate that there is an opening to wipe out Social Security, redistributing that money upward. Think about it. What became known as AFDC was actually first written into FDR's Social Security Act of 1932; the Great Society (LBJ) simply expanded on that, recognizing that a measure of financial stability is vital to becoming employable. Democrats wiped that out. Because there is no legitimately progressive voice today, the last of the safety net, Social Security, continues to be in danger.
I believe it's already out there that any one who messes with Social Security will not be re- elected. All in all this a a very poor way for Obama to endorse any progressive or even Democratic candidates. Take it off the table.
