Comments

Robert Reich explains VERY CLEARLY why a profit-motivated oil company CANNOT really be responsible for the Gulf cleanup, and why the federal gov't MUST place BP America under receivership (first article under Recent Posts) -

For those interested in such things, Heather Bachman does NOT appear to be a member of Michelle Bachman's immediate family. A neice, perhaps?

Can we stop referring to the Heritage Foundation as a "THINK" tank? Thinking is a process that starts with data and ends with a conclusion. All work at Heritage STARTS with a desired conclusion, and looks for ways to massage or concoct data, and to form arguements and talking points that support said conclusion.
Never forget, friends, that the Heritage Foundation's original mission was to prove that cigarettes did not pose a health threat.
One recent poll showed that more than 90% of Americans want solar now. Despite this demand, solar power usage is just 1% percent of the nation’s energy allocation (E. I. A., 2009). Polling findings were reported in the 2009 SCHOTT Solar Barometer, a nationally representative survey conducted by independent polling firm Kelton Research.
@MStaggerlie- Right on! That was the dumbest "Dr." ever. How about a denial tank.
Charlie Pierce said on the Stephanie Miller show today that he is tired of having a President whose default position seems to be that he can't do anything about it.
I so do not like to remind what' Bin Laden' said about Obama taknig presidency, which was that he would be the Whitehouse N_ _ _ _ _.
We are in so..........much trouble right now................. and if he goes to Nuclear this evening, I am going to lose it and go sign up for the Green Party...yes of course I will vote the Democratic President, but I do like the idea of working locally.
@mstaggerlee, I believe you're confusing sound science practices with thinking.
Its a moot point though, I guess we should call them a Conservative Strategist Tank, its more of an accurate description of why and what they do do.

David Kreutzer is a very rude caller, talking over Thom and having no manners to speak of.
I can't be the only listener who wishes guests and callers who have no manners would be cut off. I remember the "old days" when you had to have manners to be on the public airwaves.
Yes, yes, Kreutzer illustrates the odeous nature of his ilk. But I don't like beginning my day with his like in my ear.

I cannot think that we are useless or God would not have created us. There is one God looking down on us all. We are all the children of one God. The sun, the darkness, the winds are all listening to what we have to say.

Thom,
Did you know that you and Stephanie Miller are having a huge debate over whether The President is a corporatist or not? Today her and the mooks were really duking it out. She cornered both of them by saying we need to support the President more just like the Republicans fall in line with their leader. The mooks began using "Thom Hartmann says...." as a defense for their argument. It flummixed her for awhile but fighter that she is....you and she are in a big fight :).
So here's my short list of actions I'd like to seen taken as an answer to this BP disaster:
1. Call for an increase in tariffs so the Government can convert that income directly into incentives for citizens, companies and local governments to install solar and/or wind energy on private and public properties.
2. Government direct investment into factories that manufacture clean alternative energy equipment.
3. Create a special subsidary of the Fire Dept, and train peresonnel that can deal with such disasters of the BP magnitude, or Katrina, etc... that can actually operate the equipment as well as organize the response effort. This Department would do as the Fire Dept does, and permit companies. Therefore if they feel they can't prevent, stop or properly limit an accident they won't permit it.
4. Start a CCC like organization, begin with using these workers as Gulf Clean-up personnel first, then move them on to restoring and maintaining our country's natural parks.

I find it interesting that Dr. K said the Danes have to pay 30 cents per KWH is a problem. I looked at my So. Cal Edison bill and the top tier is 31 cents per KWH.
YES, I also heard that Rahm Emmanual's rent was paid by BP - finally, something we can work on to get that bastard out of the Whitehouse.
lol- Jim Ward kept bringing up the Tim Dickerson article from the Rolling Stone to bolster his argument this morning. No doubt Jim is smiling big right now to know this will be discussed - here.
RE Obama has to break free of the DLC
Sounds like wishful thinking.
Who do you think put Obama in power?
@Chuckle-
And solar thermal is being priced out at .12 kWh/
Wall St put Obama into power.
The market capitalization of BP is 98.43 Billion dollars. Where is Thom getting the $200,000,000 figure?
@Foodfacist, I don't think Thom and Stephanie are in a big fight, but her co-hosts are definitely using Thom soundbites for their arguments. I believe Thom thinks in bigger terms than to just say Obama is a corporatist and leave it at that, even when he makes such statements he details what he means as well as placing caveats.
Heck, the reality is there is little Obama can do about the spill. He can, however, use this as an opportunity to push for a lot of "Green" initiatives, as well as mandating far stricter regulations on all fossil fuel industries.
As to your other point about possibly joining the Green party if Obama displeases you with his speech. As a Green party member, I welcome you with open arms, we need as many thoughtful and determined activists we can get. Even if you don't ultimately join the greens, by all means get in touch with PDAmerica, or other such groups. Being a "Democratic Party Member" isn't as important as being an "Active Progressive".
2 months ago BP capitalization was 200B.
Sure we have the Saudi Arabia of wind in the Midwest Thom, but we don't want to deplete that resource, after-all it directly fuels so many blowhards in congress. ;-)
N

Oh, you're so right. The Heritage Foundation is a Disinformation Tank.
And while we are at using the proper terms, why don't we call "Special Interests" what they really are?
"Agents of Bribery"
And the politicians who accept their money? "Corrupt".
And the money itself? BRIBE
Sounds good to me.
BTW does anyone know if wind turbines can also double as solar collectors too? It seems to me that there is a lot of surface area on these turbines, and I've been wondering recently why could they be covered with photovotalic cells that send electricty through another internal set of wires inside the main column. Just seem like a wonderful way to get more bang for your buck if you're simultaneaously using wind and solar power.
Just curious if any one knows if this is doable or if there are reasons that it can't be done.
N
!MAXROT- Bull- He cant do much about it -
1. Set up a detour or structure with acoustics to route wildlife away from the Gulf
2. Set up search and rescue teams to get wildlife out of the area and to safety- fish could be netted and re-located
3. Francois Vorster Super Suck Vacuum http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/37600863#37600863
4. Francois phone numbers +27 728340190, +27 79932155
5. Let James Cameron and his equipment in
6. Get Kevin Costner’s separators in
7. Hold international panels
8. Bring in other teams, make everything having to do with the disaster public.
9. Develop a better blog for everyone to join in with their ideas, and not BP’s pacification hotline.
10. Use BIOGREEN CLEAN instead of DAWN by Proctor & Gamble that performs animal testing and harmful chemicals.
11. Do a full scale surveillance of all the drilling rigs.
12. Allow the foreign countries to help as they have offered with skimmers, technology, intellectual contributions
13. Allow the media more access, what is with the no fly zone.
14. Every single time a platform is set up with a drill, booms and mechanical skimmers should be hired to sit and be there, just like cruise liners have life boats
15. Relief wells should be drilled simultaneously, as they are mandated in foreign countries.
16. An international regulation arm of the UN perhaps.
17. Nationalize the oil industry and force them to expand solar and wind.
18. Put the southern states to work on solar thermal and solar panel projects. Give them the green work that Van Jones was supposed to plan out for us. They could also build vertical farming projects so that their food supply is preserved.
19. The Whitehouse should put solar panels on the Whitehouse, just as an organic garden was.

What I would like to hear from President Obama tonight? Why is Salazar not fired and arrested yet?
Why is the administration continuing to keep in place many of the top officials who oversaw the culture of corruption.
Corruption is rampant in America from the Congress to the Courts to the agencies that oversee all of the oversight capabilities of products, procedures, banks, you name it.
Obama continues to allow it all. He seems incapable of doing the job.
I would like to hear him explain why he keeps all these corrupted officials in charge of our national oversight capability across the board.
@MAXROT Great idea on solar and wind combined. I have never read about that but you might like seeing Future City if you have not done so already. Along the freeways in Germany are solar panels. Well in Future City, it is thought that the cars going by wind turbines would turn them.
I think this was actually shown in the documentary Thom was in called the Eleventh Hour- Leonardo Di Caprio
Here it is http://www.popsci.com/futurecity/home2.html
@Foodfacist, all those points are fine and I agree completely. However, what your talking about is clean up and future prevention. What I'm trying to point out is that, the government does not have the equipment or trained personnel to do anything about the source of the problem, the oil spew from the ocean floor. We can opine all we want about what should have been in place or what should be done in the future, but the reality is what it is, and whether Obama or Gore or whoever is in the White House, it doesn't matter the lack of regulations brought us this oil spew and will continue to spew until it either is stopped or depletes itself.
Also, realistically if Obama made such drastic changes to the fossil fuel industry, he wouldn't make it to the end of his first term, and the changes he tried to make would be rolled back.
N

The Gulf oil disaster will never be resolved. Spill baby spill is here to stay in the Gulf for at least one century.
The oil disaster will be Obama's OilLoo.
I now proclaim that Obama's regime can RIP. Put a fork in him he is done!!!
I enjoyed Jonathan's comments on Thom's radio show. What is Obama really saying when he talks?
Obama's regime is transparent. Take a look at who is part of his regime! He has the same flunkies and lackies who served Clinton and Bush II.

Think tanks are mercenary organization. They're the royal shortcut in the research grant game. There will always be paying gigs for people to tell the Establishment what it wants to hear.
@Maxrot-
Are you familar with the concept of the Body Electric and polarity testing? It is about energy that is empowering versus energy that is hopeless and apologetic and lifeless and slcheprock. The President is slchleprocky to me too often. HE is the leader, he sets the tone for the nation. He is not at his best. We need to rev him up just like the parish that revved up MLK JR.

Let me paraphrase Geronimo!
Our environment is listening to what we have to say.
Is our environment hearing that we will destroy it for the money-god?

@foodfascist, re: #5 - So 90% of Americans WANT solar power. I went to the Schott North America page (http://www.us.schott.com/english/news/archive.html?NID=311&highlighted_t...) and examined these poll results, and here's what I DON'T see there...
What percentage of Americans is actually willing to DO SOMETHING in order to GET solar energy? I'll bet that a minimum of 90% of the 90% that say they WANT solar want their power company to supply it, so they can simply sit on their fundamentals, watch the tube, and not expend ANY effort to make it happen. If you tell that group "Sorry, it doesn't work that way - you are going to have to pay for the solar panels, and install them yourself or pay someone to do it at your expense," that 90% number will drop like an anvil!

@foodfascist, re: #6 - I sincerely hope that the mstaggerlie thing was a typo - I'd really hate to be associated with Joe Lieberman! :D

When John McCain praises a person, it is enough to have each person faint from the stench of his words.
lol mstaggerlee- yes, sometimes your handle is just too hard to remember how to spell and I can mistype that is for sure. As far as customers willing to buy into solar farms, you are quite right. The State of colorado as a matter of fact is in the process of passing a solar community garden act, and SMUD here in SAC has been highly progressive and looking into a 400MW concentrated solar farm. All the shares have already been sold out. Here is more on these programs-
At what point will the UN or some other world consortium or even a country force us to take their help regarding the oil gush? This seems like it will affect the entire planet and there could be catastrophic consequences for everyone, not just for people in the Gulf. Wouldn't we get involved if we thought something going on in another country might wind up killing our citizens?
@mstaggerlee, well how many of those 90% of the 90% actually own their own home to start with anyway. I rent, I don't have the option of doing a damn thing about adding solar energy to my home. If I could actually afford a home, then installing solar power wouldn't be something that I would consider as an expense, I would consider it an investment that eventually would pay for itself (maybe).
@foodfacist, heck I know Obama isn't a progressive president, I knew he wasn't a progressive candidate when I cast my vote for him. He also isn't a Republican, and if we did have a Republican in the WH, we wouldn't know that there was more than 5,000 barrels gushing from the Gulf, we wouldn't know that the press is being denied access, we wouldn't know anything because the Republican administration would be far more aggressive about covering up the Oil Industry's boo boo. All we would have is rumors from the Internet and conspiracy theory's that are poo pooed on our favorite radio talk shows. I'm not even trying to say don't push Obama on this issue, he does have responsiblities to the American public, that I feel as you do, he's not fulfilling. All I'm saying is be practical when criticizing the President, but yes, by all means criticize him.
N

Why does every course of action have to have nationalism as a justification? What if something bad happened and there weren't ferners involved?
Heather Bachman is a right-wing drone, whether or not she thinks she is. She really sounds crazy. At least Thom Hartmann is going after her.
@Jeanie, you can say that again, Bachman's only premise for her arguments is this "Democrats bad, Republicans good", her research is done only to find data that supports that premise, and she ignores any that refutes it. Republicans that use the term "Obamacare" lose credibility with me, and those that use it repeatedly reveal to me that they have no substantive argument.
N
The news is playing. Kevin Costner says his contraption takes 99% of oil out of water he tells CNN. Says BP has been testing 32 of them. Keep pushing people.
re: #24: For some reason, having solar cells on wind mill vanes reminds me that the Great Pyramid at Giza originally was capped with mica. Anybody know why the mica was there?
Now we know why the south vote Republican- they all have made good money off the Gulf. $ grand a month is good money these days. Another clip I saw showed a guy who made 400 grand a year off fishing. It was not clear whether that included his expenses.
re#43: Oh, I know! The original purpose of the pyramid was a primitive "micaroscope"! :)
re: #44: yeah, mermaid brings up to $3000.
@Harry,
I have never heard of the Mica on the pyramids. CAn you be more descriptive? Mica is little silica plates that could be solar cells perhaps unto themselves.
Word, brother, word.
Actually, Obama returned the favor when he booted Dean and installed Kaine - coup d'état.
A caller to another radio show questioned, "Who ever blamed Bush Sr for the EXXON Valdez." Yet, there goes Obama saying he is responsible.
@foodfascist: I saw a documentary years ago that archaeologists had recovered shards of mica between the stones, which led the scientists to postulate that there originally was a mica "cap", which covered the top 1/5 or 1/6 (my estimate) of the pyramid. I have never heard it discussed elsewhere.

Will Obama demand BP put $20 billion in escrow? He demanded they stop using the toxic dispersant, and they ignored him.
