I interpret the commandment against graven images in the context of the time, presuming the Exodus actually happened. The Israelites were basically seceding from Egypt and wanted to differentiate themselves. One way to do that is through language. (I presume the spoken languages were already different.) They cast off the Egyptian writing system, which consists of engravings of birds etc., and went with an alphabetic--i.e. non-pictorial--writing system. The commandment to be monotheistic also fits this; differentiating from the Egyptian polytheistic religion. (It was around that time that King Akhenaten had tried to make Egypt monotheistic, so the idea wasn't new.)

Hello All

From Unequal Protection, 2nd Edition:
"If you wonder why and when giant corporations got the power to reign supreme over us, here’s the story."
Jim Hightower, national radio commentator and author of Swim Against the Current
From Cracking the Code:
"Thom Hartmann ought to be bronzed. His new book sets off from the same high plane as the last and offers explicit tools and how-to advice that will allow you to see, hear, and feel propaganda when it's directed at you and use the same techniques to refute it. His book would make a deaf-mute a better communicator. I want him on my reading table every day, and if you try one of his books, so will you."
Peter Coyote, actor and author of Sleeping Where I Fall
From Screwed:
"The powers that be are running roughshod over the powers that OUGHT to be. Hartmann tells us what went wrong — and what you and I can do to help set American right again."
Jim Hightower, National Radio Commentator, Writer, Public Speaker, and author of the bestselling Thieves in High Places
