The conservatives only seem to value life before one is born. I never could understand how the same people who want to protect fetuses can kill people with poverty and execution.
There surely are people who deserve death. If you don't think so you've led a sheltered life.
Take a test on that: Honestly consider whether Big Man deserved what he got in Susanne Bier's film "In A Better World" (a meditation upon both the strength and weakness of nonviolence).
That said, those who support the corporate-state's death penalty sentencing probably haven't ever had the police accuse them, then lie on the witness stand with the prosecutors assistance, and the judges knowing approval.
Do you know why the prisons are not filled with white liberals?
The crimes of liberals are more often found in what they did not do that they could have, than in what they have done that they shouldn't have. Liberal crimes are legal.
If Troy Davis was white, Obama would have happily granted him a presidential pardon.
Justcie, yes. Premeditated killing for justice, no. We are all demeaned by carrying out the death penalty. Is it thirst for vengeance slaked? Is it righteous, collective anger expressed and relieved? Is it a salve for victim anguish? There are lots of subjective justifications. But after the postering of justice concluding in killing someone for the sake of justice we may be left with having to answer for ourselves coming to terms with that part that gets satisfied by someone else's death.
It is a Barbaric ritual that some states have and alot of the population (unfourtunately) have a real, cruel streak and a thirst for blood, not unlike ancient Rome!
I am apparently the only liberal on here who believes in the death penalty. That being said i would qualify this stance by saying if we are to use it there better be absolutely zero doubt about the persons guilt. Also in cases like that of mr.Davis there needs to be some sort of automatic stay in place to prevent executing an innocent person.People like Dahmer and Gacy need to be deprived of their right to live. But in the average murder case i believe life in prison is a sufficient penalty. In my opinion there is a time and place for Capitol punishment but to use it in the manner Texas has is wrong.
If we could only kill those who are guilty of murder and deserve it I would agree for the death penelty. However being that our justice system is imperfect and innocent people are killed in our name only to have innocence proven later. Convicted murders like manson and gary ridgeway get life imprisionment, All murders should get life imprisionment without parole. then if we made a mistake we could release the man.
I agree completely with Wisconsin Worker. And I will also bet the Texas Goveror is running for President professing to be a true Christian to pander to his so called Christian base. How can we claim to be a Christian nation under God when there are among us those who can cheer at the execution of 234 other souls. How can we be so smug to tolerate State murder under a judicial system where reasonable doubt means nothing.
Until we stop letting barbarians and sociopaths control our national debate and also become 'elected' officials we will never get rid of this hideous practice (IE: the "death penalty").
A few minutes before the new President was sworn in
From Cracking the Code:
"No one communicates more thoughtfully or effectively on the radio airwaves than Thom Hartmann. He gets inside the arguments and helps people to think them through—to understand how to respond when they’re talking about public issues with coworkers, neighbors, and friends. This book explores some of the key perspectives behind his approach, teaching us not just how to find the facts, but to talk about what they mean in a way that people will hear."
—Paul Loeb, author of Soul of a Citizen
From Cracking the Code:
"In Cracking the Code, Thom Hartmann, America’s most popular, informed, and articulate progressive talk show host and political analyst, tells us what makes humans vulnerable to unscrupulous propagandists and what we can do about it. It is essential reading for all Americans who are fed up with right-wing extremists manipulating our minds and politics to promote agendas contrary to our core values and interests."
—David C. Korten, author of The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community and When Corporations Rule the World and board chair of YES! magazine
From The Thom Hartmann Reader:
"Thom Hartmann seeks out interesting subjects from such disparate outposts of curiosity that you have to wonder whether or not he uncovered them or they selected him."
—Leonardo DiCaprio, actor, producer, and environmental activist

I voted YES but I stiill think Crimes against kids deserves death penalty if proven guilty
It's past time to quit letting the government kill us. Lifetime in prison is a much better punishment for the guilty.

Life in prison without parole is a more severe punishment. We did it before - in 1972, in spite of Nixon's "law and order" platform..

I am appalled at the cruel execution, which in my opinion was so barbaric. Reminds us all of the KKK.
I have started a petition on Charge org to the American COngress to stop the death penalty. Please sign
