There's a greater deterrent than police crackdowns present.
The young Occupy movement people are being criticized for engaging in consciousness raising techniques, in the conduct of their democratic assemblies.
While it is truly sad that they need to go back and begin all over again where their parents were 40 to 50 years ago, it's important to understand why.
When the streets were filled with rebellion in the 50's, and with rage in the 60's, The System provided two roads converged within one corporate party. A few refused to travel either of those roads leading to the same state, but near all rebelling back then chose one of the two offered.
Near everyone who raised their consciousness, back then, comfortably chose to life-long participate in and affirmatively support the devious (D) choice within the corporate-state's corporate party.
Consciousness raised liberals considered conservative overt racism and meanness toward poor people to be contemptuous, but the liberals voted for the class war party's Democrats to covertly maintain the poor in poverty and in prisons, as a permanent underclass.
Consciousness raised liberals were filled with anger against rash Republican warmongers, but they voted for the war party's Democrats to perpetually credit card fund weaponry and wars, and to patiently manage more wars "better" than Republicans would.
Consciousness raised liberals were disgusted with unregulated pollution, but they voted for the polluted party's Democrats to regulate environmentalists, and make the profits of polluters more sustainable.
Consciousness raised liberals reviled the Chamber of Commerce small-minded businessmen, but the liberals voted for the pump-and-dump capitalist crime party's Democrats to remove the wall between banks and finance — the wall between banksters and limitless speculation.
Consciousness raised liberals were concerned about "healthcare" costs, but they voted for the privatizing party's Democrats to take all care for people's health "off the table" — something Democrats say we can't do here because "there are too many legacy system" sick profit considerations.
Consciousness raised liberals considered legal limits upon torture to be repulsive, but they voted for the "School of the Americas" party Democrats to remove all limits upon torture, other than requiring it to be done out-of-sight-out-of-mind in far off "black site" places where the screams will not be heard, with no embarrassing trophy pictures allowed.
Consciousness raised liberals ridiculed the ignorant climate change deniers, but they voted for the extraction industry party's Democrats to ignore climate change — to just watch and wait, while the glaciers all disappear and the permafrost becomes impermanent.
Having raised their consciousness, the liberals considered it acceptable for their so especially sensitive "intelligent" selves to lifelong (D) do everything unconscionable.
Our young now need to begin organizing resistance with consciousness raising all over again — beginning at square 1, again — because most of their parents wasted half a century MovingOn backwards, as unconscionable Democrats supporting the corporate party... regularly routinely providing popular vote mandates for a continuum of all the crimes of the corporate-state.

Police violence didn't stop us in the 60s and it won't stop us now. It will hurt us only if we react in kind. I think that'w what they're trying to do.

If you were so darn smart, then you'd be able to make your own clothing, build your own houses and cars and manufacture all the products you need plus farm for your own food. Create and design all the technologies you enjoy. All of these have been supplied to you by people much smarter then you. Perhaps you should exchange the word smarter for more devious. There is a difference between being smart or ignorant in that ignorance can be of certain subjects, such as politics. I personally am proud to be one of the 99% of the people who are more loving and compassionate then you could ever hope to be with your attitude that richer is better. I would much rather be richer within my soul then with any amount of money. I feel sorry for you.
The Occupiers in New York have swept Liberty Park clean (clearing away Bloomberg's pretext for assault), and their large numbers assembled early this morning forced the police to back off on their scheduled crackdown.
Onward now, to sweep government clean — to cleanse it of all the (R) & (D) corporate person representatives.
Republicans deserve no respect. Democrats deserve every disrespect. Remove them all!

Nonsense. Most of the Democratic party has been trying to do the right thing. Between unanimous oppisition from the Republicans, and opposition from a handful of Democrats (mostly blue dog), their policies have been paralyzed and, even when passing, were done so after embarassing compromises

Well, we dont need to go completely back to the 50's and 60's in regard to consciousness raising. It was alien to many of the first guard, not a part of them, it was like clothing or something they put on. Which is why it could also come off. But many of us born after that time have internalized it. Its real to us, as it was to the core of the first guard, its part of us, and so the criticism is not going to be a real deterrent.
And I agree, the "liberals" have failed to hold true to their principles. Although I personally see it as a function of "team spirit." Its strategy by the corporatists. Divide and conquer. If you heat people up into a frenzy of emotion, it diminishes their critical reasoning skills. The Democrats and liberals defend the indefensible from their own party because it is their "team" and they have to, having committed to that party and defended it.
Their pride is on the line, and its painful to admit that its not a "Republican" issue, its their guys too. But, this is an opportunity. Not a sad day. Looking at both parties clearly, and seeing them as the corporate puppets they have become is wonderful. There is no real shame in being fooled. It was a concerted and well executed propaganda war against the American people and our democracy.
Just be glad we are awake, and let go of "team" spirit. Stand on principles. Obama has failed us in terms of standing up for liberal principles. Torture, jailing people for life without trial, assassination of American citizens without trial, these are horrible, horrible things that liberals would have lost their minds had a Republican pushed through. Much like the enormous increase in spending under George W. would have inflamed conservatives had a Democrat done it.
Its all a game. Look past the red or blue jerseys with their little elephants and donkeys on them and look at the actions of the person wearing those jerseys. If you would not tolerate it coming from the other team, dont defend "your" team when they do it. Its how the whole two party scam works.
