Congressman Peter DeFazio of Oregon discusses the Republican's meme of a "ban" on offshore drilling, when there is in fact only a moratorium on new licenses; the oil companies are sitting on many viable leases for which they are not drilling. There is a shortage of equipment, trained manpower. And there is a field, the National Petroleum Reserve of Alaska, which has been proven by oil wells which have been capped, which is larger than ANWR is estimated to be.
Congressman Peter DeFazio explains why the high oil price does not mean we need to drill in ANWR. There's no shortage of crude oil - the price is rising when demand is falling. The oil companies have chosen not to expand refinery capacity, and are not drilling many of the places for which they already have leases. Speculation. The Enron loophole. Collusion by OPEC.

Jimmy Carter and even Richard Nixon saw the energy crisis coming, but Ronald Reagan reversed their policies. Thom thinks there should also be tariffs so that corporations don't simply export the pollution to partners in China.
