Transcript: Thom Hartmann: The Big Picture: Is Fox "so called" News now a bastion of Socialism? 10 August '11

Did you know Fox so-called News is now a socialist propaganda outfit?

I’m serious!

Earlier this week - Fox News talking head Megyn Kelly returned to the airwaves after taking a few months off to have a baby.

That’s when something incredible happened - Fox News started espousing the virtues of European Democratic Socialism - take a look:

Megyn Kelly: The United States is the only country in the advanced world that doesn't allow paid - doesn't require paid maternity leave...

If anything, the United States is in the dark ages when it comes to maternity leave. And what is it about getting pregnant and carrying a baby nine months that you don't think deserves a few months off so bonding and recovery can take place, hm?

There you have it - Megyn Kelly - who's actually a fairly smart person and an attorney - advocating for European Socialism right here in America in the form of paid maternity leave - something that most Conservatives would decry as an extension of the “nanny state.”

So how was it that Kelly was able to enjoy such a socialist comfort of paid maternity leave here in “dark ages” America?

Megyn Kelly: Now I happen to work for a nice employer that gives me paid maternity leave...

I'm happy with my baby and my employer.

Because Fox News gave it to her.

That’s right - it appears Fox so-called News gets it - they get that Social Democracies in Europe have some really, really good ideas… like 3 months of mandatory paid maternity leave - 6 weeks of mandatory paid vacation.

Ever notice that Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity and the rest of the Republican mouthpieces at Fox News seem to get a lot of vacations - notice how often their shows have fill-in hosts? Actually, I don't. I don't watch them, but anyhow.

In Finland and France companies are forced to give their employees 30 days of paid vacation a year - plus paid holidays.

In Norway - Sweden - and Germany - workers get at least 24 paid vacation days.

Here in the United States - over there in the United States - here in the United States - you know how much paid vacation days workers are required to have? Zero.

Unless you work at Fox so-called News - where they must have ripped their vacation policy straight from European Socialists too.

I wonder if Megyn Kelly and the rest of the gang also get free health care plans - after all - the one thing that all the Social Democracies in Europe have in common is universal healthcare.

And I bet - just like Europe - Fox so-called News has universal healthcare for their full-time employees, as well.

And here's another little secret - most of the production crews over at Fox News are... guess what... unionized!

That's right - Fox News actually supports unions - despite what you may hear their talking heads say on the airwaves.

I wonder if those unionized camera men and sound engineers get to sit on Rupert Murdoch's corporate board - like in the "socialized" nations of Germany - Austria - the Netherlands - Italy - Norway - Sweden - and Denmark - where union workers are required by law to make up as much as half of all the members of major corporate boards.

If not - they will be soon - maybe.

You see - once you cut through all the right-wing noise - and the socialist accusations thrown at President Obama and Democrats by Fox so-called News talking heads - it becomes pretty clear - Fox News is a bunch of pinko commies!

After all, they make their money using our commons - our cable and airwaves rights-of-way.

Multi-millionaire pinko commies that is - but still... pinko commies.

So the question has to be...why is European Socialism good for those who work for Rupert Murdoch - but not everyone else?

That's The Big Picture.

"No one communicates more thoughtfully or effectively on the radio airwaves than Thom Hartmann. He gets inside the arguments and helps people to think them through—to understand how to respond when they’re talking about public issues with coworkers, neighbors, and friends. This book explores some of the key perspectives behind his approach, teaching us not just how to find the facts, but to talk about what they mean in a way that people will hear."
