Full Show 2/5/16: Bernie Erases Hillary’s National Lead

Tonight’s Rumble dissects last night’s Democratic debate in New Hampshire, Bernie’s strong words to Alan Greenspan in 2003, and how Hillary Clinton ignored Elizabeth Warren’s advice on Glass-Steagall in 2004. In tonight’s Conversations with Great Minds Thom discusses how to avoid preventable deaths by eating the right foods with Dr. Michael Greger, author of “How Not To Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease.”

Who Is & Who Isn't A Progressive? - Progressive Roundtable

Mike Lux, Democracy Partners/The Progressive Revolution: How The Best In America Came To Be & Kai Newkirk, 99Rise, joins Thom. Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are now locked in a heated battle over what it means to be a progressive. Could this battle end up deciding the democratic nominee for president?

You Won't Win As A Centrist

Jonathan Capehart isn't sure that Bernie Sanders will be able to "move to the center" if he wins the Democratic nomination. The inside-the-beltway conventional wisdom is that the GOP and the Democratic candidates can be as extreme as they want in the primary - but they better be centrists in the general. I’ll tell you why the Democrats could win big in 2016 - but only if they ignore that conventional wisdom.

Voter Suppression Is More Effective Than You Know

Professor Zoltan Hajnal, Department of Political Science, University of California at San Diego (UCSD) joins Thom. Until recently - there's been no empirical research to show exactly how effectively voter ID laws actually work to suppress the vote - and how they disproportionately impact democratic voters. A new report out called "Voter Identification Laws and the Suppression of Minority Votes" used data from the annual Cooperative Congressional Election Study to compare thats with strict voter ID laws to those that allow voters without a photo ID to cast a ballot. The authors found that strict voter ID laws disproportionately impact minority votes - and that Democratic turnout drops by an estimated 8.8 percentage points in general elections when strict photo identification is in place." And that means that the GOP tactics to make it harder for citizens to vote are working - and that's not just bad news for Democrats - it's bad news for our Democracy.

Big Pharma Bro Mocks Congress & Us

America's Lawyer Mike Papantonio, Ring of Fire joins Thom. Martin Shkreli's infamous decision to jack up the price of a life-saving has reignited the movement for pharmaceutical reform. But now Big Pharma is fighting back - big time.

The Good, the Bad & the Very, Very Depascently Ugly!

The Good! Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton has been getting a lot of heat for her paid Goldman Sachs speeches and her close connections to Wall Street. But it seems like the race with Bernie Sanders is forcing her to reconsider some of those connections. Clinton was scheduled to attend an event on Friday hosted by a managing director of a Bain Capital affiliate. Yes - THAT Bain Capital - the Mitt Romney Bain Capital. But she announced on Wednesday that she wouldn't attend the event on Friday - which would've been one day after she was scheduled to meet with executives from the investment management firm BlackRock. Both events have only been postponed - but we applaud the fact that Hillary seems to be distancing herself from Wall Street - a sure sign that she's listening to the voters.

Full Show 2/4/16: You Say You Want A (Political) Revolution

Tonight’s Progressive Roundtable discusses last night’s Democratic Town Hall and whether Hillary is a moderate or a progressive, Thom talks Martin Shkreli and big pharma with attorney and radio host Mike Papantonio, and in tonight’s Daily Take Thom discusses how Democrats need to stop running to the center in general elections.

How To Remove Wasserman Schultz As DNC Chair

Jeff Cohen, Roots Action/Ithaca College/Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (F.A.I.R.)/Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media joins Thom. Hillary Clinton - Bernie Sanders and the Democratic National Committee have all agreed to hold more debates than the six that were originally scheduled. But one public policy group still isn't happy - and a petition at RootsAction.org is now calling for Debbie Wasserman Schultz to step down as chair of the DNC.

What Today's TPP Signing Means

Melinda St. Louis, Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch & Zahara Heckscher, Writer/Educator/Social Justice Advocate join Thom. Representatives from 12 countries are gathering in the world's most remote capital to finally sign the Trans-Pacific Partnership. What effect will this have on the effort to block the deal here in the US?

Rumble - Bernie Explains His Political Revolution

Horace Cooper, National Center for Public Policy Research & Sam Sacks, The District Sentinel & Scott Greer, The Daily Caller joins Thom. Bernie explain what exactly he means when he says that he wants to start a "political revolution." And that really just sounds like Sanders wants our Democracy to thrive again - which is a far cry from the wishes of Moral Majority and Heritage Foundation co-founder Paul Weyrich. So - who in their right mind would vote Republican - knowing that the GOP would rather people not vote? And isn't this country ready for Bernie's vision of a political revolution?

The Good, the Bad & the Very Very Holocrypticly Ugly!

Eric Thompson-Bey - Eric Thompson-Bey is a homeless man here in DC - and earlier today we spent an hour together at the corner of I street and 14th street distributing "Street Sense” newspapers. By the end - my toes and fingers were frozen - but Eric does this every single day - rain - snow - or shine. The "Street Sense" program is a great program here in DC that helps the homeless by elevating their voices, involving them in every part of the publication and distribution process, and earning them a living. And involving people is one of the best ways to help people. We salute the work that Eric and everyone else is doing at Street Sense - and we hope that more of these programs show up in more cities all over the country.

Rumble - All that Is Left in the GOP Are War Hawks

Horace Cooper, National Center for Public Policy Research & Sam Sacks, The District Sentinel & Scott Greer, The Daily Caller joins Thom. So - with Rand Paul out - and Ted Cruz - Donald Trump and Marco Rubio battling to proof who's the biggest warhawk - is this proof that the Republican party just doesn't care - or even want to pretend to care - about civil liberties and having a sensible foreign policy?

Full Show 2/3/16: Bernie’s Political Revolution, Explained

Tonight’s Rumble discusses the dwindling Republican field, Hillary’s continued attack on Bernie’s gun record, and whether football should be banned at public schools. Thom talks the signing of the TPP in New Zealand with Public Citizen’s Melinda St. Louis and social justice advocate Zahara Heckscher and in tonight’s Daily Take Thom discusses how corporate America is exploiting the H1-B visa program to screw workers.

Why This H-1B Visa Thing is BS

The H1-B visa program was supposed to help businesses and protect American jobs - all at the same time. So why are big corporations like Disney now apparently using it as a way to scam its way into hiring cheap foreign labor?

Actor Richard Dreyfuss Speaks Out On Madoff & Why it Matters

Academy Award Winning Actor Richard Dreyfuss, Madoff(airing 2/3 & 2/4, on ABC) joins Thom. “Pharmabro" Martin Shkreli is due in court tomorrow as part of an investigation into whether Shkreli committed security frauds.
