When back in December President Obama signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act - or NDAA - the media here in DC mostly focused on how that act restricted the transfer of Guantanamo detainees and providing funding for Syrian rebels. But out in Arizona - members of the San Carlos Apache Tribe were paying close attention to the NDAA as well. That's because of a small rider attached to it known as the "The Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2013" Also known as Section 3003 - this rider was supported by Arizona Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake and gave a foreign company permission to build a copper mine in Oak Flat - a part of Tonto National Forest that the Apache hold sacred. Ever since this deal was signed into law - the San Carlos Apache have fought hard to take back their sacred land. It's been a tough battle - but now they're getting some help from Congress. Last week - Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva introduced a bill that would repeal Section 3003 of the NDAA - and give Oak Flat back to the San Carlos Apache.
