How Right-Wing Tax Policies Drive Inequality?

Dr. Mark Weisbrot, Center for Economic and Policy Research (C.E.P.R.)/Just Foreign Policy/FAILED: What the "Experts" Got Wrong about the Global Economy, joins Thom. The chairman of the White House Council of Economic. Advisers - Jason Furman - recently wrote in the Washington Post that "Last year saw the largest single-year reduction in poverty since the 1960s." Furman's claim is echoed by a recent Census Bureau report that should that the typical household saw it's income grow by about $2,800 - the fastest rate on record. But while those numbers seem rosy - they are hardly enough to conclusively say that the U.S economy is healthy. For one - the media celebrated the household income figures despite the fact that any two or more people living in the same residence are considered a "household" - and the figures don't necessarily reflect anything about personal income. But according to Nick Buffie at the Center for Economic, "Income Inequality Has Gone Up Whether We Look At Households or Individuals" Buffie writes that whether you look at personal - family -or household income, "No matter how you toy with the precise definition of income, it's clear that inequality has gone up: by all three metrics, median income growth failed to keep pace with overall growth from 1974 to 2015.”

Earlier this year - the EPA submitted a new proposal for "Protective Action Guides" that would allow the general population to drink water that is thousands of times more radioactive than is currently legal. The proposal was submitted for public comment in June - and the comment period quietly ended at the end of July. Under the current proposal - the limit for radioactive iodine would be lifted from 3 pico-curies per liter - to up to 10,350 pico-curies per liter - nearly 3500 times higher than what is currently legal!

Climate Change - West Wildfires Doubled...

Rolf Skar, Greenpeace USA, joins Thom. For tonight's Green Report we start in Florida - where at a rally yesterday with former Vice President Al Gore today Hillary Clinton expained the connection between Hurrican Matthew and global climate change. Matthew - of course - isn't the only weather event caused by or made more extreme by climate change. We live in a world where climate change affects everyone and everything - and until we finally keep the carbon in the ground - it's going to be a compounding factor in most disasters. Case in point: western wildfires like the one that tore through Big Sure broke records as the most expensive wildfire in this country's history. According to a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences "human-caused climate change contributed to an additional 4.2 million hectares of forest fire area during 1984–2015, nearly doubling the forest fire area expected in its absence."

Pharma Bro Is Back: Same Story...Different Drug

Wendell Potter, Center for Public Integrity/Center for Media and Democracy/NATION ON THE TAKE: How Big Money Corrupts Our Democracy and What We Can Do About It, joins Thom. It's the same story with a different drug. Just a few weeks after Mylan NV faced public outrcy about the skyrocketing price of EpiPens - another pharmaceutical company - Valeant - is under fire for the price of something known. Used to treat serious and potentially fatal cases of lead poisoning - Calcium EDTA is a vital part of any poison control inventory. Recently - however - it's become very - very expensive. After Valeant purchased the rights to Calcium EDTA in 2013 - it lifted the price of a standard 7 pack from $950 to more than $7,000. It then hiked the price even higher from that $7,000 mark to more than $26,000. As result - many hospitals and poison control centers are having trouble affording a drug that they use to have no problem acquiring. This - of course - is just the latest pricing controversy facing Valeant Pharmaceuticals. Back in April - its executives were grilled by Elizabeth Warren and other Senators on Capitol for doing pretty much the same thing with different drugs. Of course - what we're seeing here with Calcium EDTA is just one example of systemwide problem with the American health system - a system that forces us to pay more for lifesaving drugs than anyone else in the developed world.
